8x60S

Anyone with much experience with an 8x60S specifically in a Mannlicher Schoenauer ? We have one at the shop that may come up for sale and if it’s reasonable I’m considering it !

I have one now, and owned a Brno 22F Stutzen that I should have kept.

Plenty potent from a 20 inch barrel.

Yes I have a Mauser it’s a European 30/06 in my opinion mines iron sighted to 500m (they must have been much better shots than me) it’s comfortable to shoot and does the job. I’m wanting a new load for mine but 200grn does the job right now.

Very nice. I have a BRNO. Brass available from the continent - RWS, Hirtenberger and S&B.

Published load data scarce for normal powders but with care you can work up loads using 8x57 and 8mm06/8x64 data ie between the 2. I used H380 to get an easy 2,600fps with a 200gr Partition. I am told N550 adds an extra 100fps plus.

I used new brass and an 8x57 seater. It was also quite popular in France

Both of mine like the heavier bullets pushed with full loads, like 195 to 200 gr at 2,500 fps from the carbine, and 2,600 from the Mauser rifle ( same load ).

The will (has) killed large deer stone dead on their feet, shot through 450 lb boar like they were warm butter, and lengthwise through all but the last 8 inches of haunch in a grizzly bear ( for the owner of my former 22F).

A .30-06 will do all that, and more, from a 24-inch barrel, but the larger 8mm bore is more efficient from the carbine.

And every old Mannlicher needs a stable mate.

Yes I had a Belgian artisan one made from a FN Mauser action. I deeply regret selling it. It had a claw mounted telescopic sight and ironsights on its twenty-five inch barrels. Think of it as a superior version of the 8mm-06 as the usable body length is superior on the 8x60S to the 8mm-06 from memory. As the 8x60S is 2mm longer on the body than the 8x57 and 1mm only longer on the neck. Prvi Partisan make the cases. Have fun. As others say Speer's 200 grain 8mm bullet is a good choice. But don't be tempted to directly translate 8x64 loads to it. Not at all wise.

Should I acquire the MS 8x60S the two bullets I find of greatest intrest are the Nosler 180 BT and the Hornady 170 SST .

In that case save your money. For both those weights the .30-06 or indeed the 7x57 is the better vehicle. The only point in having an 8mm in my mind is that it is a better vehicle for 196 grain, 200 grain and 227 grain bullets than the two aforementioned.

Army brass spent a lot of money in getting (often first time around but not always) the correct bullet weight for a given cartridge. The classic combinations are 7mm Mauser and 175 grain bullet, .30-06 and 180 grain bullet, .303 British 174 grain bullet and 8mm Mauser and 196 grain bullet.

200gr PPU SP over 43.2 grains of TU5000 2450 fps.
It’s not the most consistent load and being slower end I’ll try a different bullet soon.

I had a friend that asked me about loading for 8X60S in 1983 and I told him I had never heard of it. He brought me a case that was headstamped DWM 8X60 which impressed me. I called RCBS and was they made dies for it so I ordered them. He gave me the rifle to work up loads and it is a Steyr Manlicher Schoenauer. It is a rifle model and not the carbine. It has a European scope I don't remember the name of. Loaded my friends ammo up until 2018 with Sierra 180 gr. Spitzers and he gave me the rifle and I made cases from LC63 30.06 Match cases.

My buddy was paying $50.00 for 20 in 1983 time frame and he told me the RWS (see below) was $150.00 a box of 20.

Since my buddy died last year I was just informed the family wanted to sell it and I told them I was interested in it if I could afford it and am waiting to here back. I believe his serial number is in 1400 range IIRC.

I still have the dies and I can look up my load for it that shot very well in his.

Welsh Warrior if you can get IMR 4895 and Sierra bullets I think you will find that 43.3 gr 4895 and 175 gr. Sierra Matchking shoot quite well.

With my 8x57 and 8x56 MS I've about decided on the Hornady 170 SST and the Nosler 180 BT although I think Nosler has ceased production of the 180 BT . I have a bunch of different lead tipped 150 and 170 grainers for the 8mm but I just like the plastic tipped bullets . Nosler does have an 180 grain AccuBond I'll eventually try in my 8x56 .

Incidently as to the 8x60 we have at the shop , the folks that brought it in have not decided if they wanna sell . So I may just give up on that one .

Shortcut to the truth, this is.

My 8x57s and 8x60s took a lot of playing to get 175, 180, 150 grain bullets to shoot well, and mild loads, even harder.
200-gr Nosler or Speer with a full dose of something in the 4350 class is accurate in both cartridges.

It has 8x60 stamped on top the front reciever ring where MS usually put the caliber designation .

I think I’ve only fired at and or killed one deer with a bolt action 8mm/32 cal . And that was with a Winchester Model 70 in 325WSM . I had a Remington 700 BDL in 8mm Rem Mag for awhile but never hunted it . Same can be said for the 8x57 and 8x56 I have now I’ve not hunted either . I have however killed deer with lever actions in 32-40 and 32 Special .

6pt-sika the one I am looking at here only has the MS logo on receiver and no where on the rifle hast he caliber.

The 8x60 that belonged to my friend was the same way. Caliber not marked anywhere. If I am offered it at a good price I will try to get it just because it was his and I have so much history with that rifle and as well I have the loading dies for it.
