A good Steel Shot cartridge for use on Ducks and geese on the Foreshore

What is the consencus on a decent high velocity steel shot cartridge for use on Ducks and Geese - for use in a Franchi Affinity with 3" chamber.

I think things have moved on in the last two or three years, but is this fact or just marketing hype.

I've asked a similar question not too long who and the general consensus seemed to be gamebore super steel or mammoth in size 3 or 4.

I use Gamebore 36gm 5's for teal, widgeon, mallard also a 36gn 3 in lyalvale in the bag for the top barrel if by chance a goose was daft enough to fly in range....

Most of the time I have decoys out in the creaks so they are in range of my Spaniel to pick...

Edit, worth a few shots at a pattern plate/board....

What gamebores are you using in size 5? i didn't know they did a steel shot in 36gram?

cheers

Fiocchi do a good 35g 2
RC make a good 36g

You want go up 2 shot sizes ideally. I’d usuakly use lead 5s so use steel 3 for ducks, and BB or 1’s for geese

Eley lightening are ok as far as non toxics go. Use 1s for geese and 1,3s for quackers. IIRC they are in 36g. Smoked two Pinks night at about 25 yards and they were stone dead and good penetration when I breasted them. I have just got to the end of some bismuth ones my buddy gave me and they were great but no chance I would be paying for them haha.

I've just got some Hull Cartridge "Solway" 36g steel #3 shot 3" magnum they seem to perform as well as the Gamebore Mamoth. Got a nice grey this morning.

You really need to reload your own to get best results. I use 44 g of no 3 shot over 37 grains of 'Alliant Steel' powder with a B&P 44g wad in a 3 1/2 case. Components from game and clay reloaders. I use a cheap Lee Loader to crimp but a roll top is easier in a pillar drill but you will need to trim the case. These shells will be considerably more potent than anything you can buy, but I have fired thousands through my Berretta Extrema without any problems

If you don't mind me asking whats the cost of that? And how many do you get through in a season. Same load for Duck and Geese?

In response to Rasputin's question, about 50 p a pop. I use the same ammo for Geese, ducks and snipe. One season I used about 400 but only shot about 110 ducks but did use the gun to fire shots to disturb birds to get them to fly over me. I have now read the OP's post properly and see that he has a 3 inch chambered gun. If you want to fire a maximum load out of a 3 inch chamber then a roll top is best as you can fit more components in the case than a star crimp. Iron shot needs a lot of space for powder and low density shot. Rolling your own really makes a difference. Over pressure signs in shot shells are 1. Extrusion on the primer around the firing pin hole and 2. the headcase expansion of the plated steel head case.3 On a semi auto the ejection mark is significantly greater on the shell head.
Also as the pressure increases (as you work up a load) you see that there are fewer and fewer partially burnt flkes of propellant residue in the barrel.
