A-Tec H2 - ??

A couple of years ago I bought a second hand A Tec H2 and have suffered some pretty serious oxidisation. I've cleaned it with detergent, dried it, coated with WD-40 - that didn't work. I've tried Napier Silentsave - that didn't work. Calibre is 6mm and I've probably put less that 60 rounds (.243) through it.

I am going to use the Jackson Rifle 60% deal. Have I just been unlucky? Should I go for another A-Tec? I've got a CMM-4 on my .308 and that serves me well - Maybe I should go down that route? The .243 is only used between April and August on munty and the occasional roe - so it is light use.

Been very lucky with my Atec maxim, used all year on my .243 for Deer and foxes .Comes off after each outing.
A couple of baffles have " discolouration " but it isn't affecting the working of it .
I'd certainly have another Atec should the need arrive.

Can you post some photos please. I was about to buy one of these mods!!!

Might just go with another Ase Utra SL5i

My H2 has stood up well to 4 years and maybe 200+ rounds. I've used it almost weekly the last year on my short barreled 220 Swift and there is some wear on the first section , but still plenty of life in it. Some pics for comparison @Keith Edmunds - Maybe you've cleaned yours too much, or maybe it's fine and you just need to leave it alone and stop cleaning/disassembling? Regardless, you won't go wrong with Jackson Rifles. I don't clean mine - just grease the threads occasionally.

I also have a second hand CMM-4 that I abuse on my 270 that's still going strong after much use. I haven't had it apart for ages as it needs some persuasion.

No problems with my 3pcs H2-3. Although I run the 223 variant with two baffles so it's basically H2-2. I do take them off after each outing, and place rifle and mod in warm environment to stabilize before moving them to cabinet (where mod is usually back on the rifle). And no huge shot numbers, maybe some 300-400 on 20" 308 and 12.75" 223. Much less on 22" 260Rem.

Attenuation on H2-3 is much better than AU SL5i. More on par with SL7i if you compare product lines.

These are from the first time I took it apart last year - after a clean. The bare patches that you see soon 'grow' quite a lot of oxidisation that is very visible as you look through it. Maybe my expectations are too high but my ATec CMM 4 is clean as a whistle and used far more often.

Do they still work with the oxidisation? I assume so. I really like my h2 but it’s the first lightweight decent mod I’ve had, used it about a year and maybe 40 or 50 rounds. Seems fine. Not as much use as others reports!

Doesn’t seem too bad to me. I’m of the old school that I generally go for a sealed mod so I can’t see what’s going on and allow the carbon to build up and offer a layer of protection. Think ill got for one especially as the report of it offering better sound attenuation than the SL5i. I’ll be using Jackson’s rebate with an old north star.

I'd be more concerned about the damage in your third pic. Especially since it seems not symmetrical.

EDIT: out of interest I went to check my mods. I don't disassemble them often, but last time they were pristine re: gas cutting. Now the 308 mod showed similar cutting to your pic in first and second module. I think there must be a point until which there's no cutting and then it rapidly shows. I also think that the cutting might stop after a point (when the hole in baffle/module gets large enough)

Anyway, still happy with the mods, I selected H2 especially since German testing shows it's quiet on the first shot also. But I'll definitely start using my previous mod at range practice, it shoots almost to the same POI. Until now I've been somewhat relaxed about this, since there was no visible damage in the mod.

It jsut looks alarming when the oxidisation crystals start.....'growing'. I've tried a squirt of Napier Silentsave each end after use but still get the corrosion. Probably just me being fussy.

Just on a note about only using your mod for hunting. Looking at the A-Tec website they specify that the H2 is a hunting silencer. Which infers to me that they aren’t designed for multiple shots in a range situation.

It is interesting regards to the first round “pop” attenuation.
