A timely reminder about security

My neighbour has been broken into, the first theft in the area for a few years. They have been away on holiday for a few weeks enjoying their retirement. I know it is coincidental but it always seems to be whilst there are big house renovations on nearby that a car or house is broken into. I don’t know if the prospect of tools lying around brings the wrong sorts into the area.

Anyway I dusted off the old CCTV app to check the cameras (wired, SD card) and the front one’s lens was completely covered by overgrown vegetation. At the last renewal the police asked me to install the cameras due to HO guidance, I could have objected but it seemed a reasonable request. Cleared that out and remembered about an indoor CCTV camera that I bought a couple of years ago but never installed, it was to monitor the pup. I have put that up now and set up cloud recording on the app, very easy and quick to do. In total I have spent less than £100 on these cameras, plus £3.99/mo subscription, and hopefully they’ll never be needed, but even their presence should be enough to deter the opportunist thief.

Don't they just cover their faces?
Probably, but between the big dogs roaming and CCTV there is little more deterrent I can reasonably install. The guns are in safes in a hardened room.

I wish I could subscribe to a private armed response company, like my family in South Africa do, but they don’t seem to operate in the UK. All their houses are compounds with electric fencing and high walls, gates etc. I don’t like the idea of needing such measures, even their CCTV is too overt for me. If I didn’t have firearms I certainly wouldn’t bother with CCTV.

Sequestration of all their assets and three strikes for indefinite detention would also help. Many are serial offenders that get out early if they even sent to prison, so they just do it all again. The consequences need to be more meaningful to act as a deterrent, including immediate deportation if you are not a UK passport holder. It requires some planning and organisation though, so that’s the end if that.

No doubt. But the birch won't come back in our lifetimes and removing liberty under the current system is a short term solution.

I had my car ransacked (nothing stolen) on a rented apartment drive and the motion detecting video cameras caught nothing. If you move very slowly they are often not activated.

I stuck on an old fashioned steering wheel lock with the bar pointing down making it difficult to get into the drivers seat, also park close to the wall on the opposite side. Make life harder for them.
