Abnormal Liver

A friend shot a roe doe in poor condition and on gralloching found a liver which was pappy and had holes in it plus lungs which looked to have had a bad case of pneumonia and lung worm. Some but not all lymph nodes were swollen. Any ideas what could cause this liver condition. It was a heart shot and well away from liver so don't think shock wave caused it.

First thought is fluke, but that's a very diffuse (widespread) change to the normal liver structure. THis is a picture of a severely damaged fluke liver

Sheep get a clostridial disease "Black Disease" that affects the liver, but they are usually found dead.
I'm inclined to go with fluke, it would have been good to see some cross sections of the liver

He did cut open liver and couldn't find any flukes . I believe flukes can get to the surface and make grooves but a lot bigger than those on your photo. Perhaps they had migrated to bile ducts after decimating liver. Not sure what you mean by capsule

The capsule is a slightly grey tough lay on the outside of the liver, if removed, the liver can look a bit like that. The holes are odd, if due to fluke (or anything else) they would be filled in by inflammatory tissue. So I wonder if the holes have happened after the shot.

What calibre are you using?

I use a .308 on muntjac, and even though shot is the lung side of the diaphragm often have that "pulpy" liver after the shot due to hydrostatic shock. Had the same with roe as well.

Often surprising how far the shockwave can travel.

Do deer have a bile duct?

Looks like the outer casing of the liver has been ripped back (circled) during a brutal evisceration. Maybe it was adhered to the diaphragm, which the circled area could also be.
The liver itself seems to have been torn in the process.
Certainly if the liver was in that state while the deer was alive, it would bleed out.

Looks like shot and/or gralloch damage to me.
