Adult tail docking fee

Pretty much all medical research and views agree that puppies can feel pain from birth the same as an adult dog.
I’d be very interested to see this research. Can you post links to those papers please? I post this as a vet who has docked many puppies, and done many tail amputations and I would genuinely be interested to see this work. Should it be as you say, this ethically challenges neonatal docking but also would facilitate comparisons to other species eg lamb talk docking and castration. Thanks in advance. HT

Drop the BVA a line, I'm sure they'll send you the evidence.

Seems there is a fair bit written about lambs too.....

But you are already aware of this I am sure.

As far as I’m aware, when it’s done to pups it’s very early on before the nerves have formed in the area, so it’s a very simple thing, I don’t think it even requires anaesthetic. Obviously once adults, it’s a full procedure.
The nerves are fully formed from birth.
Growth of nerve is incredibly slow as you can see from folk with spinal injuries. However, I hadn't realised how quickly they grow in antler formation, whcih may have a bearing on treatemnt in the future.

A neonate's perception of pain is probably different and our perception of their pain response is even worse.
Removing bits of animals at birth really isn't justified. In farm animals there is a lot of reappraisal of docking and castration as @25 Sharps says. We can no longer justify mutilation because that's what always happened.
Back to the OP, everything @hcm1 says, our approaches to perioperative care have changed massively. As a young lad (pre-vet) the op would have been done with a barbiturate, needle taped in the vein adn taken 2 days to recover

There are plenty of conversations about the ethics of tail docking and castrating lambs out there - just tap it into your favourite search engine to read all about it.

At the moment we get away with it, because the welfare risk of not doing it outweighs the risk/problem of it being done. How long until we see it challenged in court I don't know, I'm just a country bumpkin.

All I know is if you don't dock 'em they get bad fly strike and it won't be too long until you find one eaten out with maggots requiring a lead injection to the head.

Not docking working spaniels will just increase the dogs suffering & end up docked but will line vets pockets even more !!! At the min my vet old school docks dew claws micro chips £35 per pup
How much will it cost 18 months down the line at end of first working season 🤷‍♂️ we have all seen it mud clarts & blood no a good look

Update, changed to a different vet practice, £320 for the tail removal instead of the £1100 quoted from my previous vet
