Advice needed on land permission for rimfire and possibly more

Hello chaps,

I'm very new to the forum but not new to shooting, I'm a target shooter for quite a long time now. However, I was recently given a letter to shoot any legally held firearm to control vermin and pests, on some property in Surrey. The field is approximately 30 acres if not a tad more, This is the 1st time I have considered applying to have the land inspected by and FEO, There is a potential issue however ,as on one side of the property there is a dual carriageway and railway line on the opposing side.
The area i plan to shoot has a clear 300 yard stretch with thick woods at the bottom of the field.

My plan to negate this, proximity to road and rail, is to get a high chair and bash bunnies and possibly foxes and corvids. as the landowner is a horticulturalist and the rabbits are eating her saplings and other vegetation she's quite instant that I remove them, the air rifle I use no longer seems to work as the furry things have worked out the range and wisely stay around 50-70 yards away. added to that I do want to humanely dispatch these pests without wounding them.

Added to that there are a lot of Corvids eating up her crops, which also need deleting along with any fox which should venture onto the land. I have on a few occasions seen Deer on the land however I don't know whether I would get permission to cull them as I have no experience with larger game, if I'm honest, I couldn't even identify the species of deer although they where those big ones! and would not want to go off half cocked.

Also I want to learn to walk before I can run and starting off on rabbits and crows would seem the correct path to achieving this.

I suppose my question is this and hopefully you wise chaps can help me,

What should I do in preparation to the FEO visit, having done some research it seems good to have a map of where and what directions i wish to shoot. other than that what would be the best plan in order to get permission to use my rimfire rifle and possibly a small centerfire to control fox and Corvids?

I have the letter, but have not approached my FEO and I'm with the MET police as my licensing force.

Ill be honest and say I'm a teeny bit intimated by FEO's and wouldn't want to be seen as a time waster or potentially as a nincompoop.

I'm a qualified RO if that helps and also already have an FAC and SGC. I shot and Ro'd for the British sporting rifle club and at some point would like to try the real thing as opposed to the paper version.

Many thanks in advance

I wouldn't worry about being a nincompop. I once had an FEO out to inspect an allotment that I had been asked to clear of rabbits. I did not visit myself until I met the FEO there.

We walked in and the first thing I said was 'Sorry for bringing you to this'

He laughed and then said, 'Well what do you think?' and I then admitted that 'I would not use a rimfire here'

He was happy with that and when I speak to him over the phone now, I always introduce myself as the guy that dragged you out to that allotment...

I now have an open condition so I'm guessing that it didn't go against me.

Go for a 22lr with mod Met will not give out 17hmr tickets? Good luck if you live in south east you will get Dave Ross wait for a open ticket for deer as I did

Many thanks bottletopbill and for the other the replies, yes I think baby steps, is the way to go,

Ideally I'd prefer to stick with my Cz455 in .22lr but, I was wondering about a .17 and from what hear the police prefer HMR/M2 due to lack of rick o shay, I'm open minded and will see what he suggests

Not wishing to start a panic.

But from what I have been told by a few friends who are RFD's, new stock of .17 is proving almost impossible to find. as a target shooter my ammo consumption is pretty high (1k rounds of 22 a month,) and many in the gun trade are telling me there's going to be an ammo shortage on the horizon.

I know of two gun shops in Essex, that have told me they cannot source any new supplies of rimfire and smallbore shot gun carts, he even said that it may come to pass that we will not have much if any choice when it comes to rimfire brands of ammo, so stock up with what your rifle likes.

I don't know if its him BS-ing me, in an attempt to get me to bulk buy, but I did fill my capacity of .22lr and intend to use club ammo for the time being.

Thanks again guys

:)

.17 is a No go with the Met for some reason turned me down and many other's one is a Plod himself.
Ro at my club was turned down for buying in bulk for competition shooting .?
Did you try Countryway gun shop in West Malling Kent

Interesting the met don't like the .17 in a way that suits me fine, as my nickname suggests I'm a big fan of .22lr.

Presently I'm allowed 1200 rimfire on my ticket,

I have heard rumours that certain police forces have been instructed to try and reduce numbers for ammo capacity on peoples tickets, whether this is true or not is another matter.

I know of a couple of guys who shoot gallery, that are allowed 5k rimfire. and have been contemplating putting in for a variation to 3k.

But I may hold back as my renewal comes round in a year and a half and I might be looking at getting a deer rifle in .243 or .308, although I gulped when I saw the price of factory centrefire these days. I must be getting old

.17 No but 243 had no trouble at all as I had over 400 acres to shoot. Now two years later I have a open ticket so good luck hope all goes well.
Do some rough shooting as they may ask for you to have a mentor to learn the ropes. may?

A history of using an air rifle on that land is significant. You know the land and have been shooting safety. Your opening post is thoughtful and considered, clearly you aren't a novice with firearms.

Empathise those point to the FEO, Good Luck

The land is in Surrey so contact the MET to ask Surrey to check the land as I had to go to the Met for land in Kent to be cleared it went up from 243 to 308 good luck

This is a conversation for the future.

Do not raise it with the FEO at this time - it is unlikely to assist you.

In my opinion , As long as you show that you have covered all aspects that don’t effect safety-back stops, ricochet, roads etc and with your obvious knowledge of fire arms and safety hopefully you will be ok.

I assume your license doesn’t mention shooting live quarry already?

Also on another note If you get stuck or the ground isn’t cleared and if finances allow possibly a NV upgrade and night sessions with the air gun would be more fruitful. I say NV as opposed to lamp as you are near a road and railway.

If that fails and your landowner is still unhappy as a last resort I’d be more than happy to bring the ferrets over and and have a day out with you in the winter-that should trim them up a bit if the holes are accessible and not near the road!

Do not know every one as been turned down including a met officer they do not like giving pistols out as well for humane dispatch. Politics
Have been told unofficially they have to cut the number of guns down due to gun crime in met area.

It may have already been cleard for certain calibre uses already.

I would apply for all calibres you need, the worst they can say is no to some of them but if they say yes it will remove the need to vary in the near future.

Apply for the centrefire for fox and deer, you have reason to do so.

My perm has a main road near it but the terrain allows for shots with great backstops, i demonstrated this by having a map.

17hmr is a bit of a pain to get in places at the minute, my local RFD doesnt have any at the min and the one a bit further away is charging over the odds. When I bought the 17 I made sure to fill up when I had the opportunity.

22lr doesnt seem to be an issue.

I’ve got a bit in Surrey hills that the met cleared for fac air rifle, and 22 rimmy, didn’t like 17 hmr
it took a while but if you are looking to clear foxes, put in for a 22 hornet as well
good luck

Book a DSC1 - it's a really useful course and the police look favourably on it. Even better if you can book some paid stalks so you have someone with you to show you the gralloch etc.
