advice on new boots

I had recommended Altberg Tethera boots on the 19/10/15 but wanted to update. Unfortunately they leaked in conditions I would not describe as wet. They were tested for leaks at the shop and failed. The shop has offered to replace them as I only got them recently but I am considering looking at something else.
Hope I havent steered anyone in the wrong direction. I am very disappointed to say the least as they were a great fit but...

Viking hunter GTX boots.....dont know where to finde them in the UK but they are the best i had so far...and i have used a LOT of boots. And they are on the lower end of the pricescale aswell.

I would recommend mindal boots i use them for stalking , beating game shooting walked hard in them straight out of the box no problem quite pricey but worth every penny had a pair of le chamois Moulton plus not a patch on mindals

Altberg gamekeeper look them up come in half sizes and five widths can get them resoled and cut to size at the factory...superb boot

Lowa Mountain GTX (also available in wider fitting).
Like (heavy!) slippers from day one. Totally abused during 5 years' worth of hard beating. Still totally comfy and WATERPROOF. I will never buy anything else.

Haix boots for me.
Not once have my socks got wet / damp.
£60 grade 1 ex army surplus, cant be wrong.

Chiruca Boa, about £150, no laces, and gore tex. Had mine 3 years and do a lot In them and rate very highly.

several recomendations...

i've been wearing the Lowa Mountain GTX for about 5 years, they are/were my, err... mountain boot of choice, i'd wear them anywhere it was rocky (snowdonia, highlands etc.. or particularly wet - mid-wales, north pennines... they have been replaced by the Haix Cold Wet Weather boot, the haix has, i think, a slightly more felexible sole unit than the Lowa, but they have passed with flying colours the 'Cold, Wet Weather' test - they did a 4 month, straight out of the box, Falklands winter tour with most of the time spent on the mountains and and in the bogs of West Falkland.

Alt-berg defender - i wear them most days and they are very comfortable, they are pretty waterproof, and when it does get through they dry out quickly. i'll wear them in preference to the Lowa or Haix above if its dry(ish) or warm(ish), and the sole is stiff enough, and the boot supportive enough to wear them for a week in the mountains with a decent sized rucksack.

Meindl Borneo are my 'go to' walking boots for summer days in the mountains, and pretty much any lowland walk in any weather. lighter, and cooler than the high leg boots i've mentioned above, they are the boots i'd choose to wear if i was walking the Hadrians wall path, or Offas Dyke..

Grisport Ranger boots are a pair i bought for 'posh' shooting days when turning up in my service boots got a slightly sniffy look from some quarters. they are wonderfully comfortable and supportive and i can happily wear them all day - they also look amazing. however, the sole unit is not, imv, built for rocky mountain walks - fantastic on farmland and forestry, and great for moorland, but (imv) the sole unit is too soft for the endless rock gardens of the ridges and corries of the central and western highlands.

not one of these boots has failed me in terms of its materials or construction - the note about the Grisport boot should not be taken as a criticism, its just what its built for - and i could write the opposite about the Haix or Lowa, both are a bit heavy and a bit stiff for strolling over farmland.

I have two pairs of boots for stalking.
1/ Harkila pro hunter the first pair fell apart after a year but were replaced under warranty with no problem at all.
The replacement pair are great, they are comfy ,warm and waterproof.
2/ Army cold weather extreme, I bought these a size bigger to wear two pairs of socks when sitting in high seats.
not as comfy as the Harkila but do the job and are toasty warm and for £60. A bargain.
Cheers Steve.
