advise on .22lr semi autos

The older CZ511 & 581 I have used/owned are almost as accurate and reliable as the CZ bolt-actions - BUT finding magazines for them is a PAIN

.22FN Auto - little take-down, great fun to use, but a limited capacity tube mag

10/22 - jamma-matics - LOVE to shoot against guys using them in club speed comps as they are usually jammed within a mag worth of ammo & out of the stage.

AR15 types - quite a lot to choose from. Mine is based on a genuine AR15 lower receiver, so in theory a quick FAC variation (hark at me, "quick" used in regard to a variation) would see a centre-fire upper on the same lower.
Not as impressed with the S&W and Colt makes - but they seem to work ok for the folk I know that own them

Best idea - if you can - TRY a few of the models you narrow your choice down to and ASK folk that own them what they think/would they buy them again, etc.

Honest. Responding to the "... know guys who shoot 10/22's and they jam all the time!" is like shooting zombies in a video game. It keeps popping up! If that is the case they are using the wrong ammo (they do not function well with subs) or shooting with dirty magazines, or both. It's not the rifle. I have a handful (5 or 6) of them and they are 100% reliable when the above criteria is met.~Muir

I use a 10/22 in club competitions, it doesn't like cold ammunition i.e been left in the club cabinet. If I use eley match it never fails to cycle so when it is a repeating rifle card I bring my match ammo ;) For subsonic for vermin I have been recommended SK subs and I haven't had an issue so far.

Always check there is not too much wax on the cases because this can cause issues as well.

i used to have a ruger 10/22 and fitted it with a butler creek folding stock and had the barrel shortened so the muzzle was protruding past the fore end by an inch, barrel was threaded for a moderator. tried using subsonic rounds through it using 25 round mags but they constantly jammed.was advised to use eley match which performed brilliant and worked well with the moderator.
try before you buy,you cant go wrong

If your barrel only protruded 1" beyod the fore end surely it would have been less than 300mm in length and thus illegal?

Less than 30mm would be very illegal - it'd need to be a good 270mm longer to reach minimum length

I have a 20yr old BRNO Mod 2-E-H which is a bolt action but fantastically accurate, I also have 2 Ruger 10/22. One is a heavy barrel Target Laminated stock with the usual extended mag release, bolt stop, buffer etc which shoots great, an odd flyer but shoots sub inch all day long at 100yrds one with an International (stutzen) stock which does the same. Very rare do either of these jam even with subsonic (winchester) ammo.
For the money you will not go far wrong with the Ruger:lol:
