Air rifle scope on a RF or CF rifle?

I’ve just put an application in for my first FAC. Assuming it’s approved, I’ll be trying to get set up on a fairly limited budget.

I’ve put in for a 22lr, .270 and a .303.

I’ve got a Hawke SR6 scope in near perfect condition. It was marketed for airguns but is there any reason I couldn’t use it on a .22lr or .270?

You'll want scopes that are centrefire rated for the 270 & 303 and I don't think the SR6 is.
Having said that, any scope that can cope with the jarring of a springer air gun needs to be fairly resilient.
It would certainly be OK on the .22lr
I have a Hawke airgun scope on my .22lr. I forget which model.

(Edit: I just checked. It's an Airmax HK3212 3-9×50. Been in regular use on the .22lr for more than 10 years, no problem).

Spot on, thanks. I’ll stick it on the .22lr and look for a rated one for the .270.
I’ll be shooting the .303 with iron sights. 👍

Can't speak for that specific model but I've recently put a Hawke Frontier 3-15 x 44 SF on my .308 Sako 85 while my Leica is away for a warranty repair. It is bloody fantastic - 1 inch tube, glass is extremely clear and it has done a fantastic job on the roes over the last few weeks. Great wee stalking scope.

This would sit very nicely on a 270, for not too much money:

An MTC Mamba Lite sold on here recently. I've got three of them with small calibre ballistic turrets and I've used them on PCP and Springer air rifles, my .22s and also on a .308 when I first got it to shoot a young red stag at 170m. Obviously got limits for low light and optical clarity but needs must.

Looks ideal but I’ll wait till I have the paperwork in order and a gun to mount it on. Also, I don’t think I’ve enough post count to use the sales section yet. I’ll keep an eye on though. 👍

ive used scopes rated for spring rifles on my 308 for yrs,and they stood up great, spring rifles can be hard on scopes sometimes, and when theoben started using gas rams they used to destroy scopes.

I had a feeling that all Hawke Scopes were CF compatible, cant see it on their website so could be wrong. but on the airmax range they have this in the manual Warning: This riflescope is a short eye relief riflescope and is only suited to minimum recoil rifles, which suggests there are other facotrs beyond the build of the scope.

Main issue with air-rifle scope is parallax which is set at short range say 30 yards, of course if it has adjustable parallax, you are sorted.

Air-rifles were breaking reticules in the 1970’s but those day are long gone, my Tasco from that era a forerunner of the Hawke lived on a 308/22rim and an air-rifle at various times in its life, it was only sold as it was a 4x40 and my eyes aged.

Fit it and enjoy your first C/F and christen it on a few deer, if you get hooked on the sport you can always upgrade in the future when you have more cash.

A mate put a hawke on a 270 maybe 15yrs ago sighted in ok and then on firing at his first deer with it the lens flew out and hit him good job he wears glasses straight back and a full refund i dont know which model it was

Hawke will be fine for the .22, for the .270,keep an eye in the sales section on here as bargains do come up. .303 I couldn't comment but would imagine any reputable scope suitable for the .270 would suffice, saying that I had an edgar bros 8x56 on my .270 for years without issue

I thought id seen it, looking at the descriptions of individual Hawke scopes there is a note that says 'All calibre rated.' I havent looked at every scope in every range, but I looked at a scope in each of the ranges (Airmax, Vantage, Sidewinder, Endurance, and Frontier) all have the same note.

They are also underwritten by Hawkes lifetime guarantee for any fault form scopes purchased post 1st Jan 2018

So whether one wants to select a Hawke or prefers something else is of course a matter for individuals. However if they have a Hawke in mind then it might be helpful to know Hawke indicate they are rated for all calibre.

All good stuff lads. Thanks for the responses.

As a bit of an update, I bought a Hawke vantage open box return at a good discount. I also put a deposit on a Sako 75 .270. However, I’m still waiting on my tickets.

I’m going to save my old Hawke airmax SR6 for a .22.
