Storing a rifle with moderator on

Question for the knowledgeable. I know I shouldn't leave a dirty mod on my rifle while in the cabinet, but will there be any harm done if the mod has been stripped, cleaned, dried and put back on prior to going back in the cabinet? As far as I can see it should be OK? For info, I put my rimfire mods in the ammo safe to split the parts of the rifles, but the CF mod won't fit and resides in the bottom of the cabinet in a sock!
Cheers, TD66

You’ll still get run off from the mod into the barrel, which will corrode and pit it. Don’t do it
How can I get run off, if I've stripped, cleaned and dried? Is there more chance of condensation build up in the mod than the barrel? (And, no, I won't forget to take it off and clean it first) it's a fully stripable predator 8. I wouldn't do it with something like a F&D where you are just spraying cleaner into the mod and hoping it's dry.
Thanks

With T8's (have 2) you can't strip and clean them so they stay on both rifles with white gun grease on the threads.
The both stand in the cabinet with the mod's on.
You won't find many people taking the chokes out of a shotgun for when the "moderator thread police turn up"
and putting back in before going out as they would forget :norty:

Do you
Stand muzzle down or up? I normally put the shotguns in muzzle down but if I did that with the rifle it would prevent any run off? (Plus I feel happier taking a firearm from the cabinet with the more dangerous end pointing at the floor even if I know its safe )

I alternate my rifles muzzle up, muzzle down,

With Shotguns M Down especially the wildfowling gun as that gets a coat of GT85 then nothing will run to the wooden stock over years. Rifles are M Up and cleared before going in the slip to go home in the truck. Cleared is cleared in my book.

I've never kept them on longer than required. I store the moderator in the gun cabinet but not attached to the rifle. I've have known other people to keep them on the rifle and they end up wrecking the barrel.

Thanks for all the comments.
Shall I phrase the question, slightly differently?
If I buy a brand new moderator, pop it on the rifle and put it in the cabinet before using it, will it damage the rifle?

Most likely not.
But you won’t get any shooting done.
So what’s the point in doing so?

Depends, do you have temperature changes in the cabinet, I live in an old property with stone walls and condensation is an issue (thats another thread) add to that different metals which may have different characteristics you may have the possibility of moisture etc building up. If you grease it up and take it out every day to shoot, clean dry and regrease you'll likely be fine. Longer periods I'd store separately, I also fit muzzle protectors that are longer than the thread so that the crown is never in contact with the bottom of the cabinet

Don’t store with mod on. A friend of mine did and the mod was stuck on, soaking in diesel didn’t get it loose. Went to the rfd he finally got it off with force, but it had to be rethreaded and crowned.

Like many others, I learned the hard way that you never leave a moderator on the rifle when not in use. I remember Steve Beaty (Ivythorn Guns) telling me that around 70% of rifles that come through his hands have pitting at the muzzle end due to mods being left on. It just isn't worth the risk.
I doubt that a completely dry, clean mod would do any harm, but as most mods benefit from building up a bit of crud, it seems unnecessary work to clean a mod each time after use.

No. But you’re also not ever going to be able to clean a moderator well enough. And in general, taking a moderator apart is a bad idea, let alone every time it’s been used.

You seem to have made your mind up, so come back in a years time and let us know how it went 😃
