Alan and I had been talking via pm for some weeks about his situation. I’m sad but also kind of relieved he’s gone as he was in a great deal of pain. Very sad end to a distinguished artisan with a worldwide reputation for excellence.
Alan and I had crossed swords on here many times (excuse the bad pun), but we always come out of it ok. A while back I teased him about being up at ungodly hours, and asked him if he was ok.
Alan got in touch privately. He wasn’t.
What followed was a remarkable conversation with a man who knew he was dying. I guess we had something in common in that he knew I’d had stage 4 cancer and somehow gotten away with it. That was 13 years ago. We got right into the nitty gritty of his situation, he wasn’t afraid to tell it as it was. His situation was terminal, a one way ticket. We talked about a range of important and urgent issues - his partner’s wellbeing, finances / wills, pain relief, acceptance of the situation. He carried himself with extraordinary dignity.
Alan married his partner of 38 years Lesley earlier this month. I feel very sad for her right now. Alan was a brave man.
Rest in peace mate.
