All-terrain tyres

BFG AT, aye, good off and on road, but known issue with them not holding balance on Hilux 17" alloy rims. I had one set replaced under warranty, a friend with same truck continues to battle with his , and my second set still dont stay balanced for very long. I'll not buy more, likely go over to Grabber X3, although they're more a mud biased tyre, but still drive well on a pals L200.

I've got General Grabber AT3s on my Range Rover L322 they are quiet on the road even at speed on the motorway and are very effective off road. And for £150 per tyre fitted for a 255 x 55 x R19 they are not a bad price.

Even for field use, you need a tyre with quite an aggressive side wall, nothing comes close to BFGs. Don’t scrimp on decent AT tyres. Had two BFGs fitted on my Ranger last month, £260, worth every penny. It isn’t JUST about how long they last, although you should get 60K plus, it is about how they perform, and nothing, but nothing performs like BFGs. The new ones are even better.

I've tried the BFGs for 30k miles now, they are finished for off-road use despite claims of people getting big distances out of them. They were not great on the road and have got progressively worse over the last 5,000 miles or so, they are not so good on snow though not very bad if you get exactly the right type and depth of soft lying snow, they are awful on wet mud especially a thin covering on a stony track. I've formed the opinion that they are basically old technology trading on a 40 year old reputation with a realistic life in the 25 - 30k region. You are clearly getting much better performance out of them than I am. I previously ran Yoko Geolanders which look much less aggressive but were much better on road, much better on snow, much better in moderate mud (I'm usually alone and a long, long way from assistance so I'm not driving into a deep muddy hole) and lasted about 25k miles. The BFGs have a reputation for being robust, though maybe that's worth the same as their reputation in other areas, and that might be worth something as I've never had a puncture despite considerable scuffing to the sidewalls and so on but on the other hand the Yokos had the same use with the same result.

You will never sway me from BFGs. I used them for the vast majority of my 30 year career as a Water Bailiff, so did a lot of off road work in all conditions, I now help out on two shoots, feeding up etc.

Not sure about 40 year old technology, they have changed a lot over the last few years. As I said earlier, I will never have any other A/T tyre on my vehicles. They don't need justification like the others, they just do it.

Special tracks :evil::evil: never been a lover of the bfg, overrated and overpriced although I do like the bfg mud terrains. The Yoko geolander are a great tyre in all conditions, I rate them higher than the bfg

BFG AT - for me BFG have been the best tyre by far, brilliant as an offroad tyre and great manners on the road. Expensive but seem to last, mine are 30,000 and still going strong. You can pick up some secondhand bargains.
BFG AT's. Without a doubt. You get what you pay for.

I must be the only one that doesn't rate AT's

I've found them too much of a compromise in all areas

To me they are a glorified road tyre

I had them on a disco then a Toyota troupie

On both occasions I swapped them out for BFG Muds

I remember being at an off road site with our off road club and we were doing a hill climb challenge - a regular member turned up with his brand new Disco on all terrains - he couldn't even make it to the start of the challenge

We were all very sympathetic, with many useful suggestions ;)

Unfortunately I’ve got cooper AT3s band have replaced all 4 running on forestry roads, it’s the BFG km2 for me next

Got Cooper AT3 on a 16 plate L200 and pleased with them so far for a similar role - roads, forestry, snow and some fields.

Seem to be wearing well so far, no idea how many miles but overall pleased.

Probably not as good off road as the BFG but better / quieter / better on fuel than the BFG which I would say is what it sounds you are looking for.

Plus they are £95 or £105 depending on the size for 17 inch rims compared to about £160

They might last a few extra mile but I can’t see it being many and certainly not 60% more

A compromise is just what the OP needs. Mostly road use with light off road occasionally is exactly what ATs are designed for.

Super aggressive muds are a liability on tarmac, and if you're a shooter (or a hedgelayer like me) and you need to drive across grass fields day after day in the middle of winter, your employer/landowner is going to pull the plug on your activities pretty quickly if you've chewed great ruts in his fields and your car is wearing half his grassland.
On the farm where I do the bulk of my hedge laying, which has a lot of hilly chalk grassland sheep pasture, my Grand Vit with the Geolanders does less damage than the shepherd's quad bike. And I've yet to get stuck anywhere in it.

Yes I do understand that - and I take your point of the aggressive tread on farm fields

I suppose I stuck my two penny worth in only because I too have wrestled with finding a balance with tyre types and just found the AT in a sort of nowhere land between road and off road

I currently run road tyres on my 4x4 and don't get stuck on my fields either

You can also mitigate the aggressive muds (to a point) by lowering pressure and increasing the length of footprint, but that can be a pain as you are forever repumping

I wish the OP well with his search

It an odd one, so many options. I went for another set of BFG AT as I was happy with my last set. If I put something diffrent on, may not have been happy, so why take the chance.

I had a Disco TD5 that came with pretty decent road tyres when I bought it but Ii was horrendous off-road if it was even slightly wet. On a track that was otherwise firm but had a with a thin layer of mud over it, it would slither sideways, slip backwards and spin till it the mud steamed.
But Discos weigh an absolute ton and the grand Vit is a featherweight that seems to float across the ground. I guess tyre choice is highly dependent on what vehicle you've got.

I would be another bfg at fan used them for years on most of my vehicles
Allthough on my present disco i use bfg muds , a bit noisy yes but i drive it at normal road speeds day in day out with no sphincter twitching even in the wet
After all its a 4x4 not a m3

The Grabber X3 looks like a great AT lingering more towards Mud AT tyre

Had them on an Amarok for the short time I had it. They look as though they would be good off road (I didn’t put them through anything testing) but they were very loud on road.

BFG AT KO2s for me.

I live in the Aussie bush,we have wet, steep, muddy terrain and its still steep as when its dry.
I use Kumhos on both of my veeheeickles.
In fact on the old hilux uterus I am on my fifth set in a row...sort of tells you something eh what!
