Alopecia areata

Just had occasion to wander down to the 'Man Cave', and almost tripped over a clump of deer hair.

Looking up to the 'mount' above the doorway and things not looking great.

It was never the finest piece of taxidermy, but it was my first ever deer, and I was determined to 'honour' it.

Looking at it now, makes me wonder whether I did anything of the sort.:-|

the larvae will eat the hair and more will fall off.
you can see a couple of casings in the photos.
look like grains of rice

@shakey jake

Forgive me, I meant how do I 'fix' it?

Have just been down to check, and you are absolutely on the money.

Bloody good eyesight old son!

as above you need a knock down to kill then a residual to stop reinfestation, if you have other mounts treat aswell, if you can find carpet trwatments that are spray on that should help.
but most chems down dont last very long so you will have to keep an eye on it

Get it in a chest freezer ASAP. A week in the freezer will have killed all moths, eggs and pupa. But having said all that, I think it it too far gone to save. If you took it outside and blew on it 80% of the hair would blow away, as the larva will have eaten through all the hair bases.

I have a boars head, and a Soay ram that I put in the freezer for a week each year. Seems to keep it reasonably clean and this was the advice the taxidermist gave me when he did them for me..

Oh dear! Rotten luck - first deer too, how awful.
How would a skull mount look - I think I might know the answer….

Your gun isn’t exactly the Ashmolean! Accept and enjoy the patina of a life well lived. I use moth spray. It is a great bit of history and I would be proud to have that as a story.
