Ammo recommendation for 308 Mauser M18

Anyone using one of these? If so is there any particular ammunition that seems to give the best groups. I will be hunting Reds and possibly Sika’s with it come the season.

Each rifle (barrel) will have at least one commercial offering it prefers. You need to buy several and test.

What is the twist rate of the barrel?

If 1/11 or 1/12 you can pretty much shoot any bullet weight but you might do better with 135/150/155/165 gn offerings. Hornady/Sako/Remington/Winchester/RWS will all offer something. ALL will work at typical deer distances. Practice at expected distances.

Think the M12 is 1/11 twist rate.
I've been using RWS Evo Green 136g to great effect with my M12 Extreme. The Sako Hammerheads are also good but not quite as accurate in my rifle.

As 308tikka said, try several brands and weights. You will find several which are outstanding for any quality rifle.

I always start with some cheap military surplus, to get on paper. Then I shoot some match ammo, my handloads or Federal Gold Medal 168 gr, to get a baseline of its potential accuracy.

Then I begin with the inexpensive hunting ammo, by PMC, Prvi Partizan, S&B, Federal Classic, Winchester, Remington, and Hornady - just a few of them. Now I know what common ammo I can buy in a pinch on a hunt away from home. I shoot a 5 shot group at 100 yards, and another group at 200 yards, to check accuracy and actual muzzle velocity and drops.

From there, I go to proven handloads which I have found to work well in all my rifles, with bullets I know to work on intended game.

Got two M12s (243 and 30.06).

I tried Federal, Sako, Winchester, RWS and to be honest, they all shot well. Settled with Federal for both calibers as they are readily available, not extortionately priced, and will shoot a 10p all day long if I do my bit.
