An American perspective.

No we didn't just a Dad and his son on fishing trips to Eire with your local youths who will be in their 70+ wanting to harm people.
Based on the date you gave, you walked into a situation where you were scapegoated and caught up in the intense anti British sentiment of that time.
It shouldn’t have happened, I’m sorry that it did.

That works both ways, but just so you know what went on in the period leading up to your trip.
In 1969 both Derry and Belfast went through a pogrom during which the catholic population was purged from large sections of both cities. The resulting flood of refugees was the largest movement of displaced people since WW2 and was only equalled by the situation in the former Yugoslavia. This happened in 2 British cities on British sovereign territory, not in some remote far flung outpost of the empire.
The army was deployed to maintain order, initially they were welcomed by the Catholic community but when it became clear that they were there to maintain the status quo that changed.
Then you had Bloody Sunday, 13 people shot dead.
I lived through it, I remember it well.
I wish more people remembered, perhaps that way we will never let it happen again.
