An update on my whereabouts

Good Evening Everyone,

This is a little update post for those of you that have interacted with my Grandad, John (Deerwarden).

My name is Billy, this account (Deerwarden) is my Grandads, John. Unfortunately since June of this year, my grandad has been unwell and been in care/hospital due to a medical condition causing some type of siezure/loss of consciousness, as well as quite severe dementia.

In the summer of 2021 my grandads wife, Penny, passed away in her sleep which deeply affected my grandad, This was also around the time, we first noticed signs of his dementia, which was quite bad.

In the summer of 2022 the Norfolk constabulary revoked his firearms licence due to his medical conditon, but fortunately I had aquired my own firearms certifcate shortly afterwards keeping most of his firearms and managed to take him shooting a few times, which he thoroughly missed and enjoyed.

Recently the decision was made by our family to keep him in care and to sell his home due to his illness. This has also caused some funny moments, as he has repeatably escaped from 2 different care homes by blending in with visitors and walking out.

If you have any messages, I will ofcourse pass them on.

Thank you,
Billy

John took me out for a fantastic day stalking a few years ago. He was very kind to a novice and imparted loads of his experience and knowledge. I still hear his words stalking today , " smooth movement onto the sticks, shoot when the cross hairs come to bear it just gets worse after that"
Riding round in his Suzuki, chating over our sandwiches.
I wish you well John and thank you.

Can’t say I’ve had any dealings with deerwarden but thank you for the post letting others who know him know how he is. Dementia is a horrible thing, we lost the MiL to it in February & now FiL has been diagnosed with it too. My thoughts are with you.

Thank you for taking the time to come on here and update us regarding John’s health, and very best wishes to John, to you, and to the rest of the family, at what must be a very challenging time.

Your Grandad always had time on here to offer words of encouragement for those new to the world of deer and deer stalking, and to freely share the vast knowledge and experience he had built up over the years.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Please pass on best regards to him. My late father suffered from dementia towards the end of his life.
It's the demeaning aspect of the disease that makes it truly difficult.

**** time for you and your family, but all the best with everything. But, you saved the rifles so you will continue making memories.

Scary memories of Mum trying to escape from a care situation, hope you are coping well, especially at this time of year with relatives visiting.

Best wishes. Getting old is the hardest thing any of us will ever do. It’s also hard on the loved ones.

But it’s also a time to reflect and remember all the good times and all the friends and family.

And it also reminds us that life is for living, but too often we just exist and put up with all sorts of crap from others.

Sorry to hear about deerwarden , we exchanged emails on a number of occasions , he seems to be a decent guy . I'm sure he's pleased that you're taking up his firearms and continuing the tradition . I've gone through similiar situations with a few of my family members , it can be heartbreaking at times . If anything , take comfort in the fact that he lived a full life and that you were an important part of it , something that will mean more as time passes .

Good man, thank you for the update; I am very sorry to hear of your father’s deterioration.
I recently lost my big bro to this horrible disease though you did make me smile relaying his escape method; my brother’s was to set off the fire alarm - to the extent that he was “expelled” from the Nursing Home.
I wish you both well and do keep on using his guns!
