Annual shooting test

Hi!

I shipped my rifle to a gunsmith yesterday for bedding and columnar bedding.
(Tikka T3X in 308W with a new original wood stock, I'm finished with plastic!🤗)
But give me some weeks or months and I will try to copy your impressive 200 yards shooting.
I'll take it as a challenge!😀✌️
No challenge at all. It can be done, that was the point.
I regularly shoot air rifle in my garden for off hand practice.
To many have become dependent on sticks or other aids.
I use sticks now but not always. At one time I never used a rest at all.

This one of my back stops

and

8'' gong at 150m, string of 5 shots off hand - the 4th probably went into Devon !

Client scored one hit on his string of 5

j

PS - pretty good shooting for a dog I thought

Yes, we do have a lot of shooting ranges in Norway.
In Vestfold municipality where I live there is 32 shooting ranges (rifle, shotgun or pisto/revolver)
Mostly because of the volunteer rifle corps (DFS, 1892) that has been in charge of rifle shooting ranges.
They have 135000 members that shot with Sauer 200 with open sights in local, regional and nationally competitions and championships.
They are slowly opening they're perspective on using riflescopes, hunting rifles and shooting on distances beyond 100, 200, 300 and 350 meters.
But you guys have some long distance shooting ranges that very rare for us.
There is a few, but 'closed company' and long travelling distances makes it cumbersome...
One of my friends over there has (had now?) his allocated deployment site as a reservist - it was a particular flat in a residential block on the northern outskirts of Oslo overlooking a large area of flat fields that were identified as a DZ for Russian paratroops. His orders in the event of an invasion were to deploy immediately to the flat, tell the occupants to leave & then engage the enemy until relieved or he was neutralised!

Probably the best fun I had on a range in Norway was shooting ‘field target’ with centrefire rifles (it’s a very popular thing over here using air rifles but because of safety traces on ranges it’s pretty much unheard of). Targets were anything from 10m to 400m & placed at unknown distances in banks of 5 - teams of 5 shooters then lined up & took 7 shots at whatever the target was, could be a bear at 362m for example or a stoat at 11m. There was no range finding allowed & you had to guess the wind. After the shots were fired the markers were called up on the radio from behind a strategic rock up on the hillside & marked each target giving the scores back on the radio. They then retreated behind their rock & the next team would shoot! There were no prone positions to shoot from, they were all sitting, kneeling or standing, some with support, some without. Guessing bullet drop & wind drift for a 52gn Sierra HPBT doing 3000fps was fun 😝

As far as scoring went, the highest & lowest shot from the 7 fired was discounted to leave a maximum of 5 scoring shots. Whatever those shots added up to was then multiplied by the number of total shots that actually scored - so for example if you ended up with 4 scoring shots which were two 5s, a 4 & a 3 your score was (5+5+4+3=17) then multiplied by 4 = 68.

It was brilliant fun & our hosts were quite surprised when we said how we wouldn’t be allowed to shoot at the badger targets they’d put out at home, & wouldn’t even be able to buy them - needless to say before we left we were presented with a stack of them & all went home with them stashed behind the foam in the bottom of the gun case 😉

As already been said, Norway, a sensible country when it comes to shooting 👍

I feel your shooting test is better than ours , its more "real world skills " practical . DS1 and DS2 has become all about revenue to the providers IMHO . I bet more than 50% of DSC pass stalkers in the UK could meet your standards!

Well... beside competition shooters and of course other enthusiastic hunters there isn't many that are willing, to try to do the annual shooting test in a standing position without any rest and support possibilities.
And for me, that's a bit strange.
I want to keep the stress and pace as high as possible, to be as prepared as possible for hunting.
Most of the guys on the shooting range are using prone or sitting and a very few standing shooting position.
No shooting support is allowed besides a sling.
In addition are meny hunters only on the shooting range not more then two times, which is the minimum (15 shots and 15 shots + 5 shots shooting).
So there is many possibilities and levels of doing the shooting test, I'm just trying to make it as hard as possible for myself...🤗

Our deerstalking test is prone bipods allowed as are back bags at 100 yards on the lowland test . People did fail when I took it , i think there is now a a test before the test or something ?
I honestly feel the shooting test does need to be more challenging here in the UK . Its not required for anyone to actually take any test and i think that's the issue ( which is worse , so they make it too easy )
If i remember correctly its three tries also on the day , best score counts basically
Excuse if i have missed how its done now , its been a long time since i took it

Hi!
Yes!🤠
I'm on my local shooting range once or twice a week all year round.
There I shoot one or two magazines standing with no rest.
It gives me the advantage and sharpnes that I need, when the day comes when I'm out hunting.
No hesitation, no wondering and no insecurity!🫡

Yesterday shooting at 100 meters.
Mauser M03 in 9.3x62.
Standing position.
2 x 3 shoots without rest or support.
The rifle is almost 1 kg heavier than my Tikka T3X in 308W, so it's a job...🙃
Round 1 : center, 6 and 4.
Round 2: 8, 8 and 7.

Low impact is typical me.
Front hold is wrong, need more training and work to be able to achieve 5 shoots closer to center.

Does the black centre measure 18cm diameter?

Hard to read the tape measure
