Anti Whilst Lamping : Very Odd Behaviour

I'm sorry, but this is a waste of everyone's time. Apart from a few rural forces, pretty well every one of them will still send one or more cars out if there's a report of people with guns, whether those concerned have called in or not. As I go out almost every night, there's not a cat's chance in hell of me calling in until it's made law. Hopefully, I'll be pushing up daisies by then.

I disagree.
fine if you are in the wild's
but reports of shots being fired inside a city centre sports centre, on a urban golf club or on a cricket pitch will always get a response!!

I call in every time. take 30 secs
never had a police unit turn up and am not about to start now

Think this whole scenario is likely to happen more with the current badger protest's.
Well done for keeping your cool.
If it were me I wouldn't have entertained the nutcase for 40 mins. I think I would have been straight on the phone to the coppers. I think/hope that with all this badger stuff going on that they would have to take this kind of scenario a bit more seriously than they have done in the past.

I think mentioning that you are feeling threatened by some one with aggrevated behaviour whilst you are carrying a gun should be enough to get a response. Then when/ if they do arrive they should arrest the nutcase for aggrevated trespass. Problem solved time for feeling smug!

Ive been shooting a permission now for 18wks on / off of two ajoining farms backing onto eachother; Ive undertaken the obigitory walk around to demonstate safe practice etc:
Agreement with both parties to shoot onlt rabbit as the place is crawling with them and nothing else for the time being; but deer and fox has been discussed for later. Plenty of daylight kills and will bring others in for ferreting

Last night; first lamping over this ground took 3 clean and safe shots; approaching kills to pick up when 'BANG' out of the blue an 'anti' with a torch in my face.... questioning, accusing, swearing - bl@@dy nutter !!
Apparently been watching for some time in the bushes ( the same boundary Ive been shooting towards !!! ) and started spouting about being me out shooting Badgers and that ( I quote ) 'you dont use red for lamping' - 'rabbits only come out during the day ... uh ?' .. 'so I must be shooting badger'.. and most incredibly ... was proud of the fact he had evaded my red lamp and claimed had I shot him that woudl in some way be a good thing as I'd get 'bird' .. ...

At this point I wanted to get the right hump; but unloaded; shouldered the weapon and kept my sticks at the ready as he continued to mouth off. and close the personal gap. and all I wanted to do was to turn and return to my vehicle some 1 mile off !! but couldnt for fear of what may occur incase back was turned.. !!

Managed after 40minutes to make the right 'noises' and comments to make him feel in control and that he had got his point over and 'taught me a thing or two', and he walked back to boundary with less wind and BS in his lungs. Kept eye to him to ensure safe to move, and took an evasion path back to vehicle
Returned to car with no further incident and spoke the farmer immediately to inform him, to which he patrolled in the jeep to determine if the anti was still about .. no luck

I know Im in the right, Needless to say I DONT and WILL NOT Shoot badgers, and was fully within my rights and the law in doing what I was about. Still extremely disturbing and will make me consider taking a 'wingman' with me next time with night vision to spot them by IR.

Im going to liaise with the farmer if we should involve the police, but must respect his wishes..

As you can imagine - Im shaken and can not think if I could have handled it better
Have BASC so might chat to them to ensure Im not missing a trick !

Hello chap, where in wilts are you, I've had issues the last few times lamping foxes, pm me rather than on here if you wish. Always best to report to police, use 101 unless you are in the midst of receiving grief, they will log, and if there is a pattern, increase policing in that area.

Regards
Pete

essex control call me to find out if its me thay have been called about if yes no choppers or coppers .

Just to make all aware,on good old FB people are being encouraged to destroy and damage any high seat, car etc they believe may belong to cull shooters.
And this is being done by a druggie faced DJ who has just lost his job because the magazine he worked for has died

I am not saying SEC 3 won't get you arrested. But what I am saying is that when you know it you can use it. A couple of months ago my dogs weed on a patch of grass forming a grass verge at the side of the highway but outside someones house. A lady began shouting at me out of her house window. They did not own the land but they kept the grass short and did not want it scorching. 5 Minutes later a car comes bouncing across the waste ground a guy jumps out says "Don't talk to my wife like that again". He then punches me in the face. I had 2 dogs on leads so my hands were tied. I dropped the leads and hit him. I stopped when he began to cower against his car. By law I could have hit him as soon as he approached me as I would have been in fear of what he would or could do to me. I reported it to the police and he was invited in for questioning. Admittedly there were no witnesses and so the crown prosecution service did not proceed. But if they had, if I had drawn blood and he had made an allegation against me, there would not have been a court able to convict me. He drove a mile round a village looking for me, he drove a sports car across rough ground to get to me, he literally ran at me when he got out of his car. All of this could give me reason to believe that violence was going to be occasioned upon me and as such so long as my violence is proportionate in that. I only raise my level of violence one step above his then I am ok in the eyes of the law. Other things can work in your favour. Previous stories of people being attacked by sabs, the time of day, any previous knowledge you have of the person all work in your favour under section 3. Man jumping out of the bushes and confronting me in the dead of nite. Smack him first ask questions later and yes you would be arrested but it would never go anywhere so long as you told the facts in line with Sec 3 of the Criminal Law act and this is where innocent members of the public fall down. Because they don't know Sec 3 they give far too much information away which then leads them to being convicted because they have admitted to going above and beyond it. Ian

I totally agree with this , if someone jumped out on me in the middle of the night in the middle of a field and started having a go i think i would give them a good hiding !! this is the problem with lot of these antis is they know the majority of us wouldn't risk our license ! however its there word against yours !
i always try to lamp with a buddy always good having a witness
i can remember once being stopped by the police in the middle of a field while out shooting foxs i told them in no uncertain words to **** off , there excuse for coming into field was to check i wasnt coursing!! was not impressed blue lights flashing and after seeing there were no dogs in jeep just the centrefire the guy decided to tell me how he used to do lot of shooting fffs do you mind ****ing off !!! lol

well done for keeping your kool

I think you were very calm Tom and probably did the right thing,so well done mate......how's the dog coming on by the way?

been advised by my FA dept to ring 101 and let them know where you are shooting - stops the en mass gatherings when some anti rings them.
If they know your there they have a chance to explain to the anti on the phone they are aware of your presence!
Personally i don`t see why you should, you are out doing something that you are legally allowed to do and have the land owners permission to do so.
We`re pandering to the slightest whim `Just in case` As long as you`re legal you have nothing to fear.
We don`t phone the law to tell them you are going to the pub just in case someone picks on you for a scrap do we?

Agree with Basil there.
At one point we were asked to ring in when we went lamping but when my boss pointed out,we couldn't get a good police response when we had caught lampers it went out the window

Agree with Basil too.
I however, do report in to 101 and get a ref number emailed to me. Some of the ground I shoot over neighbours some pig gut kicking overpaid wassocks and they get kind of twitchy when the bang stick wakes them up prior to a big game.
I am assured that reporting to 101 makes no difference whatsoever as to the whether the police come out as their policies mean they HAVE to attend all reports of gun use anyway.

Agreed.

I remember I 'phoned in the first few times I went out on my own after getting my FAC, particularly if I was leaving the car parked by the road. It had been recommended to me to do this. However, it took ages to get through and when I did the guy on the end of the line sounded so bored and disinterested that I haven't bothered again.

I always felt that it was an intrusion on my legitimate activities to have to 'phone in, and I feel a lot more comfortable not doing so.

I used to phone in to my local police control centre when I had a local number I could get through on but 101 is a premium rate number from a mobile and not counted in my free minutes so I don't bother unless Im on one of my golf courses that has houses backing onto the first fairway.

One of my brothers is a copper and shoots squirrels on a scout camp, him and his mate (also a copper) phoned in but later that day a chopper and an armed response unit were still sent out. The chopper arrived first and knowing what was going to happen they both unloaded (shotguns) and left them broken on the car bonnet. When the armed response unit arrived, although they knew my brother and his mate were also coppers and could see they were unarmed they were still pointing their guns at them until my brother told them in no uncertain terms what would happen if either of them pointed there gun at him again.

Because of what had happened the next timer they went out they didn't bother phoning it in and the chopper and armed response unit came out again!

this is the correct answer . You may not like it but with the badger cull underway any of us who shoot at night can expect more of this . If you think your too busy and this is a waste of your time just wait until armed response and a helicopter turn up , and be sure of this they will check everything while their with you . Phone the police before you go out , if you leave your motor park it out of sight or you may find it smashed up antis may even follow you home thinking your a contractor

My word, I would never have conceived it until I read this, thanks for sharing your experience, forewarned is certainly forearmed.
