A strapped version has been made and accepted as good quality but there are some difficulties with making them remotely whereby the fit is snug enough to resist a lack of friction (resulting potential for strap to untwist) but without being so snug it won't fit and also not being too loose that it lacks functionality.

Would making the cups slightly deeper mean that if the strap tension lessened they would stay on? Or do they stay on anyway as is?

Regards

They are good questions and will be answered in the next couple of weeks or so as I am going to make up another test set for an old gloss scope I have in the cupboard. I want to understand fully how these work and what the potential failure points (in terms of function) are before I commit to actually taking orders for them.

But the long and short of it is that when the cups are pulled apart with the strap straight, the overall length of the whole thing is about an inch or so longer than overall length of scope. I am guessing there needs to be an element of friction fit with the caps snugged to the scope housing to make it work at its best and this is why I am going to make another one for my own use to fully test. If that is the case, then it creates something of a difficulty when making them remotely for people when I don't have the optic in my hands. Accurate measurements are fine and I can make them to within approx a millimeter of those measurements but that level of accuracy might not be enough to ensure perfect fitment. Or when twisted and under tension, it may well pull them in to the scope with sufficent tension to remain put even if they are ever so slightly oversize. Both outcomes are plausible but I will test further and post updated info or even a new advert for the strapped variant when/if I feel I can make something that will be fit for purpose.

I am not wanting to make them too deep as it creates more cost, more stitching, more materials etc and the cost then starts going up which I don't want. Some period scopes also have odd mounting affairs that attach quite close to the front of the scope, meaning caps being too deep will not work anyway. I suppose all scopes and mounting formats are different, especially for period items but I would like to try and keep things fairly generic or it just becomes more and more time onerous which adds to cost and also extra design work for me which is not desirable. This is a hobby and not a job and I want to keep it as cheap as possible for people, whilst not overloading myself with work which I then struggle to keep up with.

Cheers
