Going FAC Air this evening, with new pipe. Currently loaded with .25 Hades and Erinmore Mix respectively, Black Cherry in reserve.

I thought twice before posting because the last thing I'd want to do is take this thread off topic....anyway, it's 17HMR this evening and something else as well as the pipe.
I’ve never smoked but have always fancied giving a pipe a try. I always was fascinated by the pipes a friends dad smoked when I was a boy. 50 now and thinking it could be time to try for myself. Any recommendations ref filter or no filter and if so type of filter. Been looking at the Parkers jockey club pipe but I’m open to advice please.

I'm a late starter, figuring what the hell, why not, I'll be dead before it kills me. I have several pipes with a 9mm filter. I use McGaheys in Topsham for my select tobacco of Black Cherry and Rum and Maple.
As you can see from my posts on this thread, I enjoy a quiet evening out with the dog, rifle and pipe.
I'd go as far as to say the smell confuses quarry more than alerts them. The last few foxes I've dropped were unaware I was there, 50m away. Maybe it masks the scent of me, the quad and the aroma of a Labrador's sweaty ballbag.
A filtered pipe is a good place to start. I prefer a 9 mm over a 6 mm but that's just what I've got used to.
While you're getting the hang of it, and it takes some practice, an unfiltered pipe will be hotter and more bitey than one with a carbon filter.
It is a learning curve. A pipe that appeals visually might not suit you in practice. I like full bent pipes because I find the straighter ones put a strain on my teeth.
I'd say start with a half-bent filtered pipe made with good briar. Don't buy a cheap "beginners" pipe. Rattrays, Chacom or Savinelli are good places to start. I'd also go for a pipe with a smallish, shallowish bowl to start with because they're easier to pack correctly, which is the first knack you have to acquire. And start with a fairly neutral tobacco that isn't too strong or heavily top-dressed with artificial flavouring. Gawith Hoggarth make the best tobacco IMO. GH Black and Brown is cool and smooth with a mild but very pleasant biscuity taste. Century Black Cordial is a good one to start with as well. It smells like something your Grandad would have smoked but isn't too strong. Generally the American blends are mild an easy-going. Dutch blends tend to have more virginia in them and are slighter hotter and sweeter. GH's Kendal blends are also good and have a unique hay-like note to them. Avoid strong twists and plugs to start with. They will put you off.
My favourite is GH Coffee and Caramel. When you open the pack it has a scent like Christmas pudding and it's a smooth, warm lovely tasting medium strength smoke.
In your part of the world UK Tobaccos at Colwyn Bay have an excellent selection and a good stock of pipes, or there's the Bear Shop in Cardiff.

Yes I often buy 25 gr packs of new stuff to try. I find it takes a few smokes of a new blend on the same pipe before you get the true flavour of it.
Wilsons is good tobacco. I think Majestic was my favourite.
My local tobacconist will be TH Dalling in Aye when I move to my new place. They've just started selling Wilsons full range as well as Gawiths so I should be spoilt for choice. Great little shop if you're ever over that way. All dark and polished wood with that proper old fashioned tobacconist smell about it.

I met a younger Danish bloke over here for the shooting in a pub on Lauder once who gave me a pouch tobacco for putting in your mouth under your lip. That was a bit different , I’d like to buy a ton but cannae find them anywhere.

This 9 mm Chacom arrived the other day. Big heavy pipe. Much bigger than I thought it was going to be. Wondered if it would strain my teeth, but it doesn't. Sits lovely.
Smokes very well indeed. Tried a few tobaccos, settled on good old Ennerdale flake. Wonderful in this pipe and lasts for ages. Great in the evening or on a long drive. I discovered today I can drive from Consett to Carlisle on one bowl with this pipe.
