Any Shultz and Larsen fans?

So, just got the renewal and with it the variation for an 8X57, I am very interested in an S&L (model undecided) but was wondering what all you good people thought of them, I have read very good thongs until now but can't find an MOA figure for any of them.

Any and all help appreciated!

Very very well put together rifles.

Their barrels are cut rifled and lapped properly, so accuracy is certainly not a thing you need to worry about. If you reload, you will be putting bullets well inside an inch with a good rest and a sound technique.

I have one of their Legacy's in .222 and it is insanely accurate. Trigger is crisp, everything that isn't wood is metal and the finish is exemplary. If you want a classic rifle with modern performance, you will not be disappointed. The depth of blueing is quality as well. Barrels go back together with no loss of zero. Hard to fault them really. Not the cheapest but not silly expensive either.

Never shot an S&L but have a few bits and actions in the workshop. Spent two days at S&L factory. Possibly the best Euro rifle and with cut barrels made on Pratt & Whitney machines. as Cottis mentioned.

Ronin, what was the reason for not being able to provide for the two? long and short "action" COL?

Changed few rifles before ,and then got a Shultz and Larsen . That was the end of my drama ,will never change it. Brilliant piece of craft everything work as you would expect,as stated above no lost of zero if replace the barrel, very very accurate. Good choice of barrel options and now they offer synthetic stock as well. Barrels are absolutely top quality cleaning is dead easy as they are hand lapped (basically no fouling in my)
You won't be disappointed

Hi, I’ve got a S&l M97 DL chambered in .30-06
I have owned it and used it pretty much daily during the Fallow seasons for 8 years or so. I’ve taken down more fallow muntjac and foxes with it than you would like to believe.
I’ve never shot any factory ammunition through it as I home load and have always only ever loaded 150gr nosler BT bullets for it, but, off a bipod at 100m it will group those at 1/4 to 1/2 MAO with boring regularity.
It’s a very well designed and made rifle, I can’t see me ever wanting to sell it, it’s a total classic and I’ve never met anyone who had a rifle that I would rather own.
I’ve got 3 scopes for it on EAW swing off mounts, one Zeiss Diavari in 2.5 to 10 x 52 for low light and one illuminated Swarovski 1.5 to 5 x 30 for daytime woodland stalking and driven game and a pulsar NV digital scope for night shooting.
If I’m shooting driven or jumpy and flighty game I take the sound mod off and fit the Swarovski IR scope at set it to about 2x mag and it’s a very nicely balanced weight.
6 or so years ago I was sat out on the edge of a forrest in Germany in a tree stand
( I’m half German) It was a beautiful frosty morning where everything was pure white and I had a winter wheat field in front of me that was all sparkly in the golden morning sunshine. Such a lovely morning and Ive never forgotten it as I shot a wild boar that was running like stink at 280 odd meters away using that rifle. I must confess though, I didn’t hold over quite enough on the first shot but my second shot connected and my 3rd shot sent him tumbling to a stop.

I enquires about the tactical rifle and two barrels but was told the chambering I asked for was not available

I was considering this rifle as it’s one action length (like T3 and Sauer STR) and has available mag space to accept longer seated heavy for calibre bullets )

I also like the switch barrel facility and hoped this may be the panacea I was looking for

Unfortunately when enquired with the importer who was very helpful, was told that they were not available in the calibre I was enquiring about

I was thinking that an action in one of your stocks and a barrel extension with the locking lugs would allow me to run my own barrels in it

Anyway I’m exploring another avenue now on a similar three / six lug action

They are very well built rifles. The bolt is super smooth. Changing barrels is s but if a fiddle as you need a torque wrench as the tolerances are quite tight. I had a beautiful victory with grade 4 wood but the front end of the stock moved and touched the barrel causing the POI to shift between the first and second shot. Despite attempts to correct this the wood kept moving so the rifle had to go. This is a story with other makes with wooden stocks and not confined to S&L. Shame as it was a nice rifle.

I’m not too sure if S&l still make the stock that I have on mine as I think that my rifle was made in the 70s or 80s , but I have a S&l stock that was made from a sold black walnut stock blank that has been laminated. Obviously this Eliminates any of the problems that you experienced , I’ve never had any accuracy problems with my rifle but I don’t think that the stocks they are making now would cause any problems either. I’ve never used a talk wrench to tighten the barrel fixing bolts and I take my barrel off whenever I clean the barrel as it’s so much easier to do a good job of it this way. I used to check zero after cleaning the barrel and putting it back on but the POA never changes so I don’t bother doing that every time now.
I’ve shot hundreds of 8x57 Js cartridges and .30-06 out of a Blaser straight pull rifles on moving targets on ranges in Germany and I can shoot faster and more accurately using my S&l . The S&L actions are so smooth and are built like tanks. The other benefits I’ve found with the S&l that I have is that I can chamber a cartridge so quietly that on a couple of occasions I’ve been able to load my rifle after having had to navigate and cross a ditch where I was less than 40 m away from some Fallow deer and was able to successfully take the shot without having disturbed the deer.

I’m another Schultz and Larsen fan. All I would add to the above is to consider arranging a visit to Ivythorn sporting. They’ve got a range so you can shoot the rifle and get a feel for it before committing to buy. Steve and his staff are all really knowledgeable and helpful too.

I love them, I think they are very well made, very accurate, well finished, reliable and they look great as well. I have two Victorys in .25-06 and .300 Win Mag.

I've shot them both out to 600y and whilst they are not thousand yard TR rifles I still was able to shoot 46 out of 50 at 600y with factory ammo out of the .25-06 and 49 out of 50 at 600y with the .300WM and home loads.

Brilliant rifles, I cant fault them.

There is a FB page for S&L rifles but a lot of the folks there are from Scandinavia so the comments are usually not in English which makes the page a bit less accessible. I created one called Schultz and Larsen UK so please feel free to join if you want to!

Their moderators are also really decent as well - lightweight and effective.

If you go out in the hammering rain the wood can sometimes end up looking a bit lacklustre but if you give it a wipe down with some oil then its as good as new.

I bought mine from Steve at Ivythorn Sporting - He is a Schultz stockist and is an excellent RFD. If you're in the market for a S&L then I cant recommend him enough. He is very knowledgeable and will make sure you end up with excellent kit at a very sensible price and no sales talk BS. Plus he has a range on site so you can try before you buy.

I've not got a S&L. I have looked a few closely and i must say have been really taken with them. If i was starting my stalking journey again it would be a S&L rifle topped with a Meopta scope.

Once the barrel extension is done if possible then you'd have a good solution. You could run a stainless barrel then.

Could not be happier with mine! 8x57JS with a long semi heavy weight barrel. Super accurate, lovely walnut Stock - I paid more for a better grade.



I have a fluted .243W barrel for it, but enjoy the 8x57 so much I haven't used it, since a few sighting in rounds on purchase.
Barrel change can be done in a minute, really simple.
The new synthetic stocks look good too, if that floats your boat.

Mine did get a bit of drenching the other day so it was stripped when I got in, dried off and is now hanging from one of the beams in my cottage by the swivel stud as the BLO dries. It then looks brand new doesn't it. Added benefit of making your gun cabinet smell like a chipshop.

I do like that smell though. The next few times you use it, as your cheek meets the stock, that lovely natural smell hits you. Always make me smile. That is probably the best way to describe S&L rifles. You just smile when you even handle them let alone shoot them.

OLAF is right about cleaning as well. Chamber cleaning is so easy with switch barrel rifles. No making a mess of anything other than the barrel which is then nice and easy to tidy up. I am no regular cleaning fan but when I do it, I do it properly and it is so easy with the S&L compared to my other rifles.

I keep looking at the tactial barrelled action. I have a 6.5x47 Lap itch that might need a weighty scratching. Might have to go and look at stock options.

My dream (but realistic dream) rifle is a S&L Victory with fluted barrel in 7mm Rem Mag. I'm going to put in for a variation at next renewal.

Dearer than run of the mill big name brands, but not stupidly so and a genuine life-long rifle. Most affordable premium brand out there I would of thought without going into the exclusive silly money end of the spectrum.
