Anyone using .22 solids over hollow point for Rabbits?

I did pest control on two USAF bases for 13yrs and was only allowed to use 22lr. I used Eley standard and zeroed at 70yds and head shot rabbits out to 150 yds. I once set up over a valley to shoot rabbits at 175yds, if I remember it was 32 clicks up and my friend and I head shot the rabbits. I also found that hp rounds made a much louder smack as it hit an spooked others.

Here's one to poke holes in, might it just be the sheer amount of rimfire (. 22lr)ammo that is fired compared to all other calibres that you are bound to have more ricochet, its the very nature of a bullet to change direction when an obstruction is hit, imho all bullet types kill very well if put in the right place, people as always over complicate things, Fire away.

Hmmm. I shot the 22 in various forms for very many years and thought it was a great round - within its limitations. I also found it to very prone to ricochet no matter what the surface was, when you think about it a standing shot is let’s say five feet off the ground and even at 50m makes for a very shallow angle, the further out you go the shallower the angle (bullet drop aside) and inevitably exponential risk of unpredictable ricochet off virtually any surface. It has its detractors and there are still issues about case splits but 5 years ago I went for the 17 hmr and it is a fantastic round with much less tendency for ricochet. In my experience I have found that it pretty much doubles the effective range of the 22 and 150m shots off sticks are pretty straightforward. Incidentally having seen a lot of dead headshot rabbits bouncing all over the place I now shoot them in the neck and the lights go out instantaneously, with this great little round you can easily pick your spot with confidence. Just my thoughts.

recently got a 17 mach 2 that is working out very well, no richochets to date and very accurate little round and does the job efficiently

The permission I'm dealing with wont tolerate any noise at all, until the other day I had a 17HMR in the cabinet, which did the trick out to 100M with ease, but only on a still evening; a variable 5mph wind made such an impact on accuracy that I've just gone back to a 17 Hornet for those longer range shots (half the wind drift at 100M). But can't use either on this particular permission, hence my question about more accurate .22RF ammo.

One thing I'm not convinced about is how much less a .22 hollow point is likely to ricochet than a round nose, doesn’t seem to make any difference! Shot placement and backstop are what its all about.

If there is a total ban on lead, I wonder will the calibre make a resurgence with ntx bullets.

If noise isn't a consideration, .17hmr is a fine calibre for small vermin.

If noise and ricochet are a real issue, isn’t this a job for an airifle - possibly FAC air rifle, and or cage traps for rabbits?

I just posted about these in another thread, but I recently bought a SR-22 that came with 400 rounds of CCI standard velocity.
I've been using it on rabbits and havent had any issues killing them but will be trying other rounds like Eleys when I get through this last 50.

Ive had a few ricochet but its not really an issue on the land I shoot on.

Dosnt the subsonic speed mean there will be ricochets no matter the the ammo on hard ground .I’ve had ricochets with .243 not ideal but there tis .

Exactly what I was trying to explain, shoot fifty . 22 subs you will prob get a few ricochet to varying degrees. Shoot fifty 243 and you will pobs get the same if not more
