Applications now open for Defra deer chiller trailer grants

Talk about SD at its finest. Connor posts that there is the potential for 50% off a chiller trailer for those who may need/want it and pretty much every post has been finding fault with the offer.
I’m not at all finding fault with the offer, it’s the cost of the trailer even with 50% off.

You would need to be rolling a lot of stuff over to warrant it he cost.

You would be if selling direct to a game dealer with the current prices but the scheme is also about increasing productivity so I'd say aimed at those who could shoot more if they had space to store deer to be collected or space to store deer and process themselves. We all know your views on shooting deer and the costs involved but not everyone shares that view and so this may well be of benefit to them. Fallow were £2/kg here last season so not too bad for those who could regularly fill up to a 20 capacity chiller.

The trailers would be ideal for those who want/need to go somewhere else to shoot deer but have no storage there. This way you could attend a site to shoot up to 20 deer and have someone collect them who wouldn't usually bother for 2-3 deer or you'd have to run each one to the buyer.

Or as VSS quite rightly pointed out just park it up where you want to process or store your deer and have the ability to move it when needed without the hassle of getting a truck and crane to move it.

The deal is, spend £16K or £20K on a chiller trailer and Defra will give you 50% back - so your trailer has cost you £8K for a 20 and £10K for a 30 deer capacity.
What you do with it is up to you, Defra may not have looked fully at the business/financial plan, but it's a good deal if you have the ability/wherewithal to generate enough cash to support the initial outlay.

Most likely the business couldn't justify a £20K outlay as the cost of recovery (in both time and money) was too much but the grant now makes this feasible.

All Connor has done is fowarded this 'deal' into the group. He hasn't a scooby about the business plan (yours or anyones).
I can't imagine that any commercail operator/farmer didn't know (in advance) of this grant as it was first muted in Feb 2025 and a webinar was held 10 days ago (21st may).
I also think it only applies to England and has some pretty tight conditions.

For example you need to be registered with the Rural Payments service and have been given a Single Business Identifier (SBI).

Anyone on here comply ??

Am I right in thinking this is just for new trailers, not something one could use to offset the cost of refurbishing or kitting out an old one?

I am fairly certain that this fund is just for new kit. In my day job we have got several things through it in the past.
