I am not sure if this new but thought I would post it anyway. We have probably all thought that the lead issue would be the one to stop people shooting but I wonder if the attack is now from another direction.

Best of luck with that Priti, Police cyber units already have an 18 - 24 month backlog investigating 'real' criminals, throw firearms licensing into the mix and you've yet another recipe for failure, they simply won't cope.

Based on a single event, if they are to focus this much, why is the effort not made on financial fraud/ scams, illegal immigration/ human trafficking, illegal weapons, drugs/ organised crime as all of these does ruin far more lives as opposed to a single firearms incident, which in my opinion could have been prevented if the red flags were picked up.

It would have been nice to have some sort of digital voting system where people can provide their views to influence government decisions and amount of funds allocated to these as a country should be run to benefit the majority of law abiding citizens and ensure their quality of life as opposed to minority pressure groups with vested interests who put their agenda and/ or profit in front of what's good for the majority or the country. One could only wish...

Medical checkup ups been in place for a while now it's the form the doctors do when a renewal is due
But not all forces are asking for them

Shows how inadequate MPs are, just doing what she thinks will progress her career rather than having the bottle to say that the police she is in charge of made an error of judgment.

Headline grabbing stuff why don’t she deal with issues like migrants crossing the channel with such determination?

Are GP competent or qualified to make a decision on a persons mental health? Wonder how GPs will react to this given it is not part of their GP contracts. Or is priti going to make it so?

Agreed. I read into this that all forces need to do the basic medical proforma that a lot of forces already do and also look at social media and other intel a little more. Nothing revolutionary, or beyond realistic expectation really.

Also look at your financial records, all getting very silly, obviously FEO are qualified accountants, yet their is not even a country wide standard training course or qualification that an FEO needs to do their job.
As always make it look like the gun owners are the problem.

In this case it is clear the police authority did not do enough in terms of potential checks and action, but yes in the case of this incident the gun owner was ultimately ‘the problem’

‘Problems’ will only be weeded out by ensuring that the checks performed are as comprehensive as reasonably possible.

But put another way, as a licensing manager in local authority, I can say without certainty that taxi drivers are subject to more detailed checks more regularly, and with a raft of mandatory training, than any gun licence holder.

Putting licensing onto local councils will be a hotchpotch of differing disasters. The lefty councils will do their worst to stop everyone having anything to do with guns by being as obstructive as possible, the failing councils will make a pig's ear of everything and councils in the shires will let everyone with a double barrelled name have what they want. Then when the licensing person is on holiday or sick, things will grind to a halt. They will have to liaise with the police anyway to do many of the checks and that'll add to delays. And there's still no guarantee that things will be administered in Northumberland as they are in Kent.

Yours optimistically...

Yep, as law abiding licence holders they know where we live, easy target.

Like hunt sabs.... funny how you never see them chasing hare coursers.

That’s nots what’s being suggested.

IMHO, the article throws up a number of key questions

1 What exactly will be the requirements/detail of the “ Medical checks” and how consistently will it be done across all the police forces as there is a lack of consistency currently regarding SG/FAC grants and renewals

2 Who is going to undertake the testing and the responsibility that comes with it given the pressure the NHS is under as we roll in to the winter with the longest backlogs for basic operations and procedures since records began

3 How/who is going to pay for it ( I have a feeling I know the answer to this one!)
