ATV flail mower

Hi, all . Sorry for going over old ground, but I need some real world advice. I'm currently looking to reclaim some land that nature has taken over. A wheeled machine is out of the questions due to punctures. I have a little Ransomes MG crawler and I wonder about the possibility of putting an ATV flail mower behind it. I'm currently looking at a used Logic machine, 18 hp Briggs motor with hammer flails. Are they any good or a bit of a compromise? They're not cheap, so any thoughts/ experience much appreciated. Many thanks.
Regards, Rob.

I have a Chapman with heavy-duty flails on it. A good piece of kit as the Logic is also. They never beat a tractor-mounted pto flail or bladed mower but are better than nothing. Just take it off in small slices and don't overwork the machine

Thank you, chap. I figured that the little crawler would be slow enough to let the mower clear its lungs.
Regards, Rob

I have the logic 120 I think it is ?? 18 hp engine,it’s not a bad machine like,I find 14 turns down is a good height for all jobs. Keep the belts tight and it goes like a train

Thanks for your reply, mate. I need real world answers rather than the sales patter of the agents.

I’ve got a number of Logic quad appliances including a Blade paddock topper and it’s great quality machinery that is really well designed and withstands some hard use at times.

I’m sure the flail mower would be great and I’d have no hesitation in getting one.

I know you said a wheeled machine is out of the question, but as a trailed flail mower has wheels I’m going to give you my non-atv suggestion anyway:

They cut saplings up to 40mm, serious bits of kit for clearing land, we used to send them out on hire and never found them lacking. Easy to maintain and good Kawasaki engines. Just fill the tyres with a sealant for puncture protection and away you go.

Mines worked perfectly for the last 6-7 years. Good for mowing the forest tracks as well. Keep it well lubed and the bolts tight and it's a great machine.

Here’s some before and afters (the high scrub in the second 2 pics was probably as far as you could push it cutting wise) any bigger and it will ruin the belts on machine 🙈

Don't underestimate the capabilities of a High Grass Mulching (HGM) deck on a Countax - in this case my 4x4 version. I'd love a Logic Flail to tow behind the quad but provided as @Sakoodin1 says, you take it steady and don't let the belts slip, my HGM does all we need up on our shoot :thumb: It will comfortably mow over the bonnet height grass!

Out of interest, what machine is yours?

Thank you for your reply. I'm getting the impression that it's half decent gear.👍

Hello mate . Saplings up to 40mm? That's a hell of a cut. Out of interest, what sort of money to hire such a machine? Certainly worth a look.

Yeah they are pretty serious things, but obviously you have to walk behind it so perhaps not as convenient as a trailed machine.

My boss used to charge £50 a day, going back five years or so.

Definitely worth an ask around to see if somebody local to you has one that they hire out. Other brands will be available no doubt that have the same effect.

I might have to have a look. Test the concept. 👍

It a 1.2 mtr cut. There are many on the market made in China but solidly made. Engine starts first pull after being idle half the year. Flails wear well as long as you don't mow too many rocks. The exhaust box will shake itself to bits after 2 seasons but cheap to buy and replace off eBay. As I said ,keep it greased and the bolts tight and it will work well.
