Avian Influenza

@palmer_mike if you have friends that me be worried may i make the suggestion to call deffra and ask the question directly.

There maybe different rules for different areas!?

My contacts are keepering in 3k and 10k zones, rules may be different for outside those zones.

We’re in the same boat mate, i poultry manager on a free range site in Wiltshire, waiting for the email any day now to shut the birds in! Part of me wants to shut them in any way just because it’s a massive worry, but on the other hand I love nothing more than seeing them out!
I feel your pain i really do!

If i was free range i would be packing my pants right now!

Thank god mine are indoors, and in a biosecurity bunker 😂

I believe from reading the info on BASC website that properly cooked meat is of little concern but if that has been backed up by science im not sure

Has anyone picked up any dead game birds that they think may have died of Avian flu? We have. Although they did have Hexamita before they went into the release pens, that was some months ago now, and they got treated. But we have recently picked up several dead pheasants over the last couple of weeks.

I think they have had AI outbreaks on 5 of their sites (don’t quote me), if that’s the case it’s probably down to poor bio security and has been spread by an employee travelling from one site to the next!
The problem is nowadays, people don’t want the agricultural life, so these big companies get in agency staff etc.

They follow the rules while somebody is watching them as soon as the guard dog has buggered off, and their let loose unsupervised, rulebook is out of the window!

Seen it happen!

Yeah completely agree, but you’d be surprised at the amount of egg collection drivers and feed lorry drivers I’ve b*locked for not spraying and dipping on entry, I’ve got a 5 bar gate covered in signs with a very very good wheel sprayer…and yet they’ll still come straight in!

I have heard that pheasant are being decimated by AI and partridge on the same ground are hardly affected?

I did see quite a few dead Mallard on the The Bog ranges Friday last, but there were also many Red Kite about, so maybe stoop kills.
Possibly, red kites and buzzards have been hit a fair bit as well, obviously from eating carrion that has died from
AI.
