Avian Influenza

Yeah completely agree, but you’d be surprised at the amount of egg collection drivers and feed lorry drivers I’ve b*locked for not spraying and dipping on entry, I’ve got a 5 bar gate covered in signs with a very very good wheel sprayer…and yet they’ll still come straight in!
When I ran building sites I found signage to be like wallpaper, know one takes any notice of it.
Those just popping in for a few minutes are the worst for compliance with anything. I used to ring up and bo!!ock there boss that way they got the pain passed onto them especially if he got to recognise my voice 😂

Just had an email to say DAERA, N Ireland has expired/revoked all general licences. Wonder if DEFRA is going to follow.

I have heard that pheasant are being decimated by AI and partridge on the same ground are hardly affected?
Have you picked any pheasants that you think have died from Ai? We have recently, we thought our birds are wandering due to the mild weather and poor cover crops, but we also think a good few may have died of Ai.

Well this is all very confusing! Last thing I saw for a few of the shooting associations was that shoots ok to go ahead and also ok so sell the bag as long as a game dealer was willing to take them?

Not me, a mates shoot they have lost a lot of pheasants to AI and very few partridge.

Avian Influenza has always existed, its just that this strain is more potent. As much as it is distressing to see the number of dead/sick birds as we are I'm sure numbers will bounce back. Here on the Solway last year there was a tideline of dead geese with crows feeding on them and then flying inland.

I don't see how it can be contained and and any biosecurity measures on vehicles etc will be peeing into the wind, bio-security measures may work for birds in sheds but for birds living outdoors then dipping your wellies will be a waste of time, rather like wearing a mask when you left your table in a restaurant to visit the loo to stop the spread of covid.

By all means deal with the situation on your own way!

I have a good friend who is a wildfowler, and he’s taking his own bio security steps When he goes to the Marsh, he knows he’s ****ing in the wind and getting wet legs, but he feels as if he’s doing his bit to not transfer the disease from one place to another, which frankly is all you can do!

As for recovery as well, that’s just a guessing game, I spoke to one of my landowners this morning where my roe deer ground is and he informed me the fields look like the Somme , dead birds everywhere, geese, ducks, pheasants, buzzards, crows and seagulls you name it.

He also said he was speaking to one of the gamekeepers on a part of the farm, and they said they’re shooting regardless this winter, even if they have to stick the birds on the muck heap!

Personally, if that was me, I wouldn’t even bother going as I can’t bear the thought of something going to waste just for the sake of pulling the trigger!

The recovery of numbers is not a guessing game they have been hit with AI in the past and have recovered, I suspect that avian influenza has been around as long as the bird species that exist today. I.e. a long long time.
