AyA No 53 fit and finish

Hello everyone,

I'm interested in trying to understand the level to which this model of gun from AyA was finished. Were they made to the same standard as a No2, a No1 or somewhere inbetween? I think the No 56 seems to be finished to a higher standard but there's not that much information around on the No 53.

Any 53 owners out there, I'd love to see some pics and hear your thoughts.

Thanks!

The barrels on even the lowly Yeoman were chopper lump. The sidelocks may have differences in the internal lockwork as there was a AYA Countryman sidelock and then the No2 and the No1.

As far as I know the internal lockwork on the No2 and No1 is the same it is just the level of engraving that is visually the difference regarding the action and locks. With then variations of wood grade, single triggers, or Holland's spring tube self-opening mechanism under the barrel.

The No56 I don't know, but I have to mind that it has sideclips and/or a hidden third bite that neither the no2 nor the No1 have. So cost wise the basic construction with sideclips and a hidden third bite would have more time consuming and more costly in labour skills needed.

So was it "made to a standard" is more correctly asked as "made to a pattern"? If that helps? The "pattern" for the No2 and No1 being different from the "pattern" for the No56 before any consideration of engraving quality is then made. Hope it helps.

Thanks for the reply. You're right there about the side clips and hidden third bite, although the No 56 was a different action as far as I can determine. It was their competition gun and was built on a heavier than standard action, and "beefed" up where it counted for longevity. The No 53 is similar having side clips and a hidden third bite but built on a lighter frame similar to the No 1 & 2's (the lockwork is the same for all these models as far as I'm aware).

Thank you. In simple terms for my simple mind I'd call the No2 and No1 as "game guns" on the English style 1 1/16 ounce for 1 1/8 ounce (30 gram and 32 gram) and the No56 as you say a heavier gun of more of an old school Monte Carlo Live Pigeon type 1 1/4 ounce load (36 gram) sidelock. If that makes sense? I suppose the No53 was for the man that thought sideclips and a third bite was just extra belt and braces...or maybe he'd acquired a large stock of Baikal cartridges? LOL!

Anyhow here's a link and as you say there's the same approx 6lbs 12 ozs weight for No2, No1 and No53 with the beast of 7lbs 8ozs being the No56.

I'd agree completely 👍

I'm wondering if the No 53 was finished to a level similar to a No1 or a No2, I've always fancied one but never seen one in the flesh.

I should have thought to check the website, I just assumed it was no longer now that AyA have gone under (tragic!). Many thanks for the links, it's much appreciated!

I have a no2 20 bore built on a 53 action with a secret bite.I was told this was built on the early 1980s when the Spanish gunmakers merged into a short lived cooperative.

A twenty bore on 53 action sounds like fun, I'd imagine that's nice and lively in the hands.

First shotgun at 17 was a yeoman
Fell in love with the case hardening

Then got a no4 ... should have kept it

I'd love another 1/4 & 1/2 choke be lovely
