Back to a single calibre

agree with all of this. Or go off the wall and choose a 30-06. 110gr for foxes all the way up to 220gr for anything else you fancy if a trip abroad grabs you.

I have never shot a 30-06 But from what I have read the recoil from this round is more than exceptable
but again if I was only shooting in the uk the swede would be top of my list with the 7x57 a very close 2nd
what it will boil down to is the majority of deer stalking rounds do the job well , it will be the one you like the look and size of the case and one you have every confidence in , with only one centre fire in the cabinet there is always going to be compromises ie too big to use on this , to small to use on that , stock dimensions no good for 1000yrd plinking but great as a sporter ect, go tactical and can use it for everything although will be a bit of a lump carrying it about all day
you pays your £ you take your choice
good luck , I have gone down to one rifle twice and every time I wish I had 2nd just incase, it's not shooting well , needs zeroing, ran out of reloading components ect

I don't really want to split the kits up just in case the rifles don't sell and I'm left with them.

Mainly Roe and foxes but occasionally Fallow and when the situation allows I,d like to do the Reds & Sika.

I know you've kind of discounted it but the 25 06 sounds perfect. Brutal foxing round with 85-100g, and will knock fallow over all day long with 100-120gn. It almost covers the 22.250 and 308 bases perfectly. The only potential limitations might be pin shooting very large rutting reds, where a heavier bullet of higher BC might be better, but that being said I have taken several large sika and reds with mine without issue.

I can't think of another round that is adequate for general deer duties, and is outstanding for foxes.

A .25 cal would be perfect for all your intended quarry, a 257 Roberts or 25-06 loaded with Sierras 120 Game King will drop anything in the UK, then load with 75grn V-max for fast flat shooting varmint round, however if you are mainly shooting Roe and foxes with the occasional Fallow i would seriously look at a 6mm of some sort.

the 25-06 was actually one of the other calibres I'd looked at but discounted it due to max bullet weight.[/QUOTE]

WHY !!!!!! I shot a .25-06 for nigh on 40 year's. Using 120gr Nosler Partition i shot vast amounts of Fallow and Red which are some of the Largest to roam the British Isles and the. 25-06 put the Deer down as swift and cleanly as my .300 Win-Mag using 185gr or 200gr Lapua Mega.
When like your self i went to One Rifle the. 220 Swift and .300 Win-Mag went kept the. 25-06 bought some Leupold QR mounts zeroed my Foxing - Vermin scope that i used with NV for 75gr V-Max and my Deer Scope for the Partition. Job done One rifle deadly on ALL Quarry from Fox to Pere David Wild Deer and Park Culling.

Its starting to look like there's four calibres back in the running. Cheers

A lot talked about 30-06 recoil but it is no big deal. Due to the nature of the powders used it has mild manners like the Swede. The recoil is more of a push not a punch and to my perception the recoil from a 30-06 is less than that of a 308 of similar bullet size.
Dont get me wrong my go to stalking rifle is a swede. With 140gr bullets it will easy kill red deer, last year a Scottish royal from 280m. The Scandinavians used it to kill elk!! On top of that it is less affected by the wind than a 30cal and therefore very accurate. It's just if you ever went after boar then the 30 cal comes into its own.

As an all-rounder it's a cracker. The 25 05, 260/6.5 swede, 7mm 08 to my mind occupy the 'middle ground' of commercial calibres. With care they'll do it all.

I think that there's an argument for a heavier calibre in the cabinate to compliment them for boar, or if you are exclusively shooting large deer, then 30 06-and in my view 7mm rem mag-shine. However for the uses you outline you they are great options.

If it is a 'shoot all' rifle you are going to have WANT to shoot it ALL the time. I would say that most shooters I've met including myself can shoot anything once, some can shoot it 5 times but for most that's enough.
A 30-06, 270 Win and 25-06 are fine for a few shots then it gets tiring. My brother in law's 7mm08 in T3 hunter kicks more and sounds louder than my old .308. I've shot a fair range of calibers from .50 BMG through .577 and 500 Nitro express to the .17 Rem. Big calibers are great fun but it is also nice to stop.
I shoot the .270 at work now and again but wouldn't want to do it every day. I have a .35 Whelen at home, I definitely don't want to shoot that much more than I have to. The kick and noise are not huge by 500 NE standards
but no fun either.
The 6.5x55 on the other hand I could shoot all day. Same for the .243 Rem. Even if they are in light handy rifles.
Easy to use, accurate and effective.

.25-06Rem. + 110gn Nosler Accubond, a combination that deals with all UK quarry, no problem at all.
Even with a much cheaper Sierra Prohunter 100gn bullet, it will still take big red stags, be fast and solid for fox too.
Stopping power with significantly more authority & only just a little more recoil than a .243Win.

You could not go wrong with a 30/06. Bullet selection is unmatchable and it will get the job done. A flat shooter and hits like the hammer of Thor with a 180 gr. Loaded ammo is about a common as H2O and the recoil is manageable, especially if you add a Pachmayer Decelerator recoil pad. Varmints to Eland, hit in the right spot it WILL go down. Happy shooting to you.

If the recoil is that severe on what is basically a normal round then there is something wrong with the stocking up and fit not to mention a poor technique.
