I normally use the Nosler eTips, which are comparable to an accubond in terms of damage / frangibility. I've used the Virtus Merlin, which are v similar to the Yew Tree and have had similar results to you - emphatic stopping power but messy!

Where's that mythical bullet that drops deer but then turns into non polluting fairy dust?! :-|

Tom, what line of projectiles from Virtus did you use? From your comment above I suspect you are using the Merlin line of projectiles. Maybe I could advise you in order to possibly get the results that you are after? If you use the same weight for calibre, you will not need to change your load. Simply change the projectile for a different result you are after. Kind regards, Vern.

Hi,
Same weight for calibre.
Does that just apply to Mono bullets, as most load data for regular bullets changes with different bullet designs?
Thanks, Ken.

Hi Ken,

The statement I made is only valid for Virtus Precision LTD projectiles. The Virtus Merlin and Osprey projectiles in the same caliber and same wight will have the same dimensions, ogive and BC. They will never change from batch to batch either. The only difference will be the size of the three petals that will break off on impact from the Merlin design that will be bigger compared to the Osprey projectles. Therefore the terminal performance will be more with the Merlins compared to the Osprey design. Both will have the same POI at 100m and at range. Again, if your OAL is measured from the ogive, the Eagle line(same weight and caliber) of projectiles will have the same POI at 100m but it will be different at range due to the BC with the Eagle that will be less compared to Merlins and Ospreys. The Virtus Eagles have the best terminal performance but some stalkers will not like the carcass damage from the Eagle projectiles.

Kind regards,
Vern.

Hi Vern;
Thanks for explaining that.
Ken. 🙂
Ps. Do you have any plans for a light (55 grain) .224 bullet for critters and small deer?

No problem Ken. We are just trying to help where we can. Yes, we do have 55GR and other weights as well in the same caliber. We have a number of new projectiles that will be loaded on the website very soon. We have tested it all but honest feedback will be greatly appreciated.

If in doubt don’t.

Given the view in the photo of the OP I wouldn’t take the shot.

But in real life, not an image taken from a scope video, you have a very much better idea of the ground and what is behind the animal.

@Virtus Precision UK Thanks for the reply. You're quite right, it was the Merlin.

Apologies - in hindsight, my post could have been better worded. I wasn't implying any criticism of the Merlin bullets - in fact I think they work splendidly within their advertised parameters and I will have no hesitation in using them as and when I want something with a greater degree of fragmentation than the Nosler etips. I assume your Osprey bullets would be more similar to the etips and will have a go with them at some stage. :tiphat:

No problem at all! Like I said we are just trying to be helpful where we can. So far we have been getting really good feedback but we are always open for any improvements to our products and like getting any feedback from our customers so we can strive for perfection.
