Barrel Twist

Hi
can anybody tell me about barrel twist, I'm looking to get ether a Remington 700 SPS Varmint in .222-50 (14" twist) or .243 (9 1/8" twist) why and what advantage is the differing twist?

I figured that rather that explain in my own words it was better to copy from one of the worlds top barrel makers

It works in practice too, my old Tikka Continental Model 55 .22-250 had a 1 in 12 twist and was a ragged one-holer with 60gr Hornady and 63gr Sierra bullets.
