Hello all

I have created this thread for everyone who attended the excellent BASC DSC1 course held at Great Cressingham between 24-28 April 2024, led by the excellent and very knowledgeable Trevor Banham.

I thought that if people wanted to stay in touch after the course then this could be the place to come to post updates, celebrate passing the written tests (when results time comes! ) and just generally discuss how we all got on.

I got a lot out of this course, not only from the way Trevor taught it, but also from the sharing of views and experience from a really good variety of backgrounds of the guys on the course with me.

I am now going the the shops to get a case of Bud Lite, as I now have an inexplicable craving for it...

All the best, and good luck to you all.

James

Hi , couldn’t agree more was on that course , (Steve) great bunch of lads on it and agree , Trevor was a good man to do the teaching , I got loads out of this as not having a stalking background it was all new to me ( shotgun background ) enjoyed today despite the weather the shooting and safety stalk ( thanks to the other Trevor who ran that another good old boy ) and thankfully passed them , just got the wait on the written part of exam

Gutted , postman dropped results in today ! Dropped one section and probably shouldn’t have , failed the Visual ! Have to look into retaking it

That's a shame. But then again, if everyone passed first time it wouldn't be much of a test, would it?
When you say "visual" do you mean the deer ID part?

Best of luck to you. I hope you get it second time around. Just remember, most of the important identification characteristics are at the back end of the deer, so dont allow yoursef to be distracted by head and antlers. Start at the back end and work forwards. By the time you've reached its bellybutton you should have the answer.

(Caveat: some deer might be looking straight at you. But you can afford to get one or two wrong 🤣).

Thanks , but more homework needed , work on the does , think that’s what let me down males were fairly straight forward , cheers will ring basc tomorrow

Did they give you any detail on which answers you'd got wrong? If they did it'd be a good starting place for your revision. Good luck with the resit!

No , just get a sheet with the other four sections signed off and a blank in the “ visual “ section
I’m guessing it was one of two of the doe pics had the bucks sorted , guess this is the easiest to study for again but probably should have been the simplest to pass ! Worst thing is I probably missed by one answer ,just done a couple of those test I d exams online and passed them ! Head down and redo it

I think the ID is the hardest bit to pass (apart from the shooting test). Everything else you can simply learn off by heart to pass the exam, but you never know quite what images will be shown in the ID test.

Hadn’t thought of it that way , it’s one big learning curve so onwards and upwards !
I did a firearms awareness course yesterday with Jim at Dgvm , nice course as I’m limited in use of rimfire /centre fire rifles , shotgun use for decades , used a .22 lr , .22 magnum , 17hmr and then spoilt !! A blaster r8 thumb hole . 308 with a leica sight what a piece of kit , 3 holes touching 100 m bench rest , don’t think I could justify that but something to aspire to !

I agree, this was the test that worried me the most. From what I can remember, I think they even threw in one or two muddy deer just to spice it up a bit!
