DSC1 practical assessment practice

Knowing the target area is probably more important than shooting practice. The DSC1 target will not have a visible target area on the deer target. If you are 100% certain where this is it will give you a larger margin for error. If you aren't aiming at the centre of that area your accuracy becomes far more critical. This doesn't require any shooting practice just memorising the target.
Hi Kieran, Thanks for the advice, after having no response from three or four rifle clubs I’ve managed to find a club so I’m off to a three hour safety briefing next Sunday followed by some target practice with a .22
Although I know I can just book a stalk with no experience I’d personally prefer to get some practice under my belt on an inanimate object. So touch wood things are now starting to progress.

Good luck with it. You are going about things the right way and talking a lot of sense. Gaining experience can be a slow process but I think you will find the more experience you get, the faster opportunities present themselves. Hopefully someone who can mentor you will present themselves to you soon. I’m sure you will get there.

You’ll be fine. Don’t over think it. If your DSC1 course is anything like mine you’ll get plenty of opportunity to have a good look at the target close up and you get a couple of goes at the test if nerves get the better of you.
I did the DSC1 up in Perthshire but I’m actually down your way to do the game meat hygiene course at Ashbourne in February.
Good luck with it.

Thanks Ian, things are progressing now, I've joined a shooting club so getting some experience with a rifle, I've also got two stalks confirmed before my DSC1 so I'm not so concerned now about the practical. Ive now got to decide on a calibre before applying for my FAC and try and get a permission!

Thanks Co'den, Im getting some trigger time in now, albeit on a range so not so worried now. The game hygiene course is something i've got my eye on for future as well as a butchery course.

Good stuff. I did the BASC handling and butchery course up here. Pretty basic but enjoyable all the same. Met some good folks and got to take some meat away. Well worth the money I’d say.
I’m doing the game hygiene course at Carlton Moor. It covers both small and large game and gives you your trained hunter status and number. Pretty sure it runs once a month.
