BASC survey lead free transition

Well that's down to each and every one of us, isn't it? It's not BASC's fault. There is a chance to avoid legislation. If it doesn't work, it won't be a choice anymore. Up to the individuals. It's like fighting against electric cars or heat pumps. It's going to happen anyway. Up to you how you want to play it.
And if no viable alternative to lead exists? Like for instance in my muzzle loading rifle and 577/450 martini Henry? (Both conditioned for deer)

Well then if you switch to non-lead for everything else, fill in the surveys so BASC has evidence of this, and others do the same, and in the end they decide legislation isn't necessary, you get to keep using them. And perhaps that won't work. But perhaps it will and it costs nothing much to try. As the great Jacques Brel sang: "Si c'est pas sûr, c'est quand même peut-être" ("If its not certain, it's still perhaps")

BASC’s consultation response considered every shooting discipline, both live quarry and target, and the documents we submitted can be downloaded here:

In our response we made our position clear to the HSE that BASC was opposed to any further regulation on the use of lead ammunition in the UK for the following reasons:
  • Regulations are already in place to mitigate risks to wildfowl from the use of lead shot in wetlands.
  • There is clear evidence that lead shot poses a risk to a wide range of bird species in terrestrial habitats and a voluntary move away from lead shot for live quarry shooting with shotguns is reducing these risks.
  • The shooting sector must be allowed time to develop non-lead shotgun ammunition due to a world shortage of components and the need for manufacturers and assemblers to source new machinery to produce lead shot alternatives and biodegradable wads for all shotgun calibers.
  • Lead in game meat is potentially a risk to human health via secondary exposure and government guidance and market forces are managing risks via best practice.
  • Lead exposure pathways are not conclusive for livestock, soil, soil organisms, plants, and surface waters; and current legal and regulatory frameworks are in place to manage risks.
BASC remains committed to the voluntary transition away from lead shot and single-use plastics for live quarry shooting, which commenced in February 2020. The industry has made enormous strides forward in the development of lead-free shotgun ammunition and biodegradable wads to date, and BASC will continue to drive this process forward.

Avoiding legislation will not satisfy the likes of WJ. As just because you have decided now to move to non toxic it would not stop you reverting to lead at a later time.
To be fair Wild Justice don’t care what is in our firearms. They want all forms of sport with firearms stopped.

The move away from lead was to try and show us as forward thinking and in a good light to stop the likes of WJ trying to stop us altogether.

Think we have perhaps that message has been lost.

It ask about deerstalking which if its being done legally you should be using a RIFLE.
It did in one question then everything else was about shot shells. No mention of bullets at all.
I still filled it in but think that perhaps a few more questions directed purely at stalkers might help engagement IMHO.

I think if you go on the WJ website blog and look you will find they care a lot about what is in our firearms as it is a very easy to excuse to attack shooting with.

Four from April this year, but look back and it is a regular issue for WJ

Ok I stand corrected. The WJ supporters I have met just want to ban all forms of shooting.
Let’s hope they stop when we go lead free.

Sadly i think as you suggest even if we stopped using lead they would still want all shooting of live quarry for sport or fun as they call it to be banned.
And guess what? BASC Honorary life member John Swift apparently went on Mark Avery's blog to bash shooting sports -disgraceful

It is a survey relating primarily to the use of lead shot for live quarry shooting. There may have been a pre-screening question as regards deer stalking and if that was your only type of live quarry shooting then that would screen you out as it is a survey relating primarily to the use of lead shot for live quarry shooting. I have completed it myself and it was very straightforward. But always an angle for an argument it seems.

Hi Conor I have filled in the survey and I shoot live quarry with a shotgun.
As people have asked why are you (BASC) doing a survey now please could you answer this question.

Thanks for completing the survey. This is part of an ongoing consultation on the use of lead shot for live quarry shooting as you will have seen from the questions posed.

Hi Conor
To be fair this is not a consultation rather an Audit.
There is nothing in this document which suggests a two way discourse that will alter policy from BASC.
This questionnaire seems to be an Audit of how many have changed and issues they may have had in changing,
I think if that was made clear then it would be received differently.

And that is called asking for Dane-geld,
And the people who ask it explain
That you've only to pay 'em the Dane-geld
And then you'll get rid of the Dane!

And that is called paying the Dane-geld;
But we've proved it again and again,
That if once you have paid him the Dane-geld
You never get rid of the Dane.

So wrote Mr Rudyard Kipling. Which I suppose he found time to do waiting for his cakes to be ready to bring out of the oven.

Couldn’t agree more. Death by a thousand cuts
