Just turned up on my face ache feed.....

Seems they are offering a hybrid course with live assessments but all inputs via the t'internet?

I've read about the new non DMS approved PDS course offering a similar approach.....so guess BDS recognise a gap on the market?

I know from chatting to BASC DSC1 deliverers it's can be a massive faff and limited profitability doing the F-2-F course.

Will be interesting to see how this pans out. Personally, I enjoyed the opportunity to talk to other like minded individuals in a room when I did mine a while ago. I'm 55 so probably not the demographic this is aimed at.... and will appeal to people coming in with more committments re family/job than I do at my time of life I guess.

Still, feel there will be a useful element missing from this experience/training.....

Can't find a link to the announcement on the BDS website though....

The way shooting is heading as it suites the people who want to by-pass the grass roots of learning.
Also means the people who are running this type of stuff can't pick up on who might need a bit of extra help also do they know who is really typing the answers...

You fill in the gaps by watching people in the class room...

Like you, I found the opportunity to spend a few days in the company of like-minded individuals a very valuable part of the whole DSC1 experience, but it seems a lot of people struggle to get the time off on a weekday to complete the whole 3 days. So I guess there's a demand for it. And the assessment day will still provide the opportunity for a bit of banter.

The assessment is not online, so no question about who's typing the answers. That part remains the same as before.

The grass roots of learning is key best part of 11 years of school then 4 years of collage for me and many others...if you don't have time to learn how will it play out when stalking....
If you keep cutting parts off soon there won't be anything to cut off...also it is the preferred route to owning a rifle these days!!

Hence the demand for courses, I guess.
Rightly or wrongly we are where we are. You and I were both lucky in so far as we grew up in situations that enabled us to learn skills as we went along. Not everyone is so fortunate, and many people come to shooting later in life after a torally unconnected career. Any training is better than none.

This looks entirely positive. It's 2024. Why do we need to spend a couple of nights in a hotel and drink bad coffee in a draughty village hall when the material is a set of PowerPoint slides? The assessment centre has to hire the hall and then cover travel expenses for those teaching.
Everyone can learn at their own pace and the course operator provides help that can be accessed by those that need it. Cheaper, easier and more effective for both the provider and the learner. Seems like progress.

Not sure about the Cheaper bit 3 day £295 online with the assessment £340.

So the price charged is £45 less for now. That is good, right? And, as a candidate, I would spend less on travel accommodation? Which is also good? The organiser will be spending less. They may or may not pass that saving on to the learner, but BDS are a charity and you would expect any saving they make to contribute towards the organisation's goals.

All in all, a more efficient way to deliver the training.

Definitely fills a gap in the market. As it is in essence the 'entry level' certification and the exam is still monitored in person, seems a good idea to me.

People that feel they would benefit from face to face still have various dates to choose from

With respect, I have some knowledge of the work that's gone into developing this, and I think you'll find there's a lot more to it than just a set of PowerPoint slides!
Of course. And the beauty of this model is that the provider can afford to put together a really great set of resources because the operating cost of delivering a course is much reduced.

This is very true. I didn't start shooting until I was 25. I have no interest is shooting game birds or big social shooting events so "putting in the graft" as some like to call it didn't appeal and wouldn't benefit me and certainly didn't fit in with my shift work and family commitments.

I'm still good friends with one other guy from my DSC1 course but I never made any shooting contacts or opportunities from it.

Being able to learn at your own pace then sit the exam and shooting test when ready is a great idea and covers those who can't get 3 days off mid week or who aren't suited to 3 days of intensive learning then a test.

Long gone are the days of the guy working a 40 hour week and then having the rest of his time free for hobbies and sport because the wife was home to cook, clean and look after the kids. Different times/generations call for different solutions.

I think is a good idea to have another option to use particularly for younger stalkers. My DSC 1 was delivered by a very knowledgeable chap who would I suspect have been locked up by Starmers Police for the language and opinions passed on. This was 24 years ago and I am sure things have changed but PowerPoint is very old hat now as are some of the educational theories. If you are bored, look up 70/2010 learning. 😳
