I am intrigued with the idea of a compact keplauf in.270 but everything that I understand about .270 tells me this could be a bad idea.. ? Anyone tried the BA13 in .270. I have tried .243 a d .308 and found them very agreeable.

I would suggest that in a 16” barrel a 270 looses a lot of the point of a 270. It is a small bore with a large powder load that needs a long barrel to give the powder the space to burn and to accelerate the bullet up to a good velocity.

If you want a short barrel then it helps to have a bigger diameter bullet. You have a bigger surface area so the same level of pressure will have a big area on which to act so more force on the bullet, and more force gives more acceleration which results in more velocity. This is why fat cartridges like the 308, or even better the 338 Federal can achieve good velocities out of short barrels. With a 16” barrel, I would expect a 308 with 150gn bullet will achieve better velocity than a 270 with a 130 gn bullet.

With a short barrel and 270 you will end up with a lot of unburnt powder leaving the muzzle. This will lead to lot of muzzle flash and noise. Stick on a moderator and it will still be noisy - the moderator will act as a combustion chamber for all the unburnt powder. If you want a short barrel go 308, with a cartridge loaded for short barrels. If you want a 270 get a normal length barrel - say 22”. Even a 4” moderator on the end, in a BA13 you will still have a rifle that only the length of a 26” barreled sxs shotgun, and they are really pretty handy.

A short barreled kipplauf is also not balanced properly. Short 16 or shorter barrels makes sense on military rifles when you are jumping out of vehicles and helicopters in close quarter type combat in urban areas.
