Best low light scope for stalking?

I’d love someone to explain why a 34mm tube is a prerequisite for the ultimate light gathering scope.

Despite the wizards in Japan and Germany, none have managed to find the magic light gathering pixies to stuff into your nitrogen purged scope

This. S&B might have an extra 1% but at the cost of a lot of extra weight and no UK service
“Might” being an important point as well, since the 96% claim is coming from the manufacturer.

The key part of the original question was ‘for general stalking’.
Which I think would also rule out fixed-power 8X scopes, as others have mentioned.

The big boys make some very good scopes, swaro, ziess, S&B etc but in my experience I have fallen in love with the Burris. I have 3-12x56 on my stalking rifles. No parallax to deck about with and I find the light gathering to be fantastic. Yes the big boys get you an extra 2-3 minutes (at most in my opinion) but I like the Burris for the fact if I knock it I am not bankrupt (400 compared to 1000+) and they have a lifetime warranty equal to Vortex’s.

Ultimately would chat to a few people and try theirs and see what suits you. Not all scopes suit all eyes.

best scope in low light for general stalking?

There are 2 parts in the question...with low light being the first as you can define that...,general stalking for many could be up in the highlands where my self in Essex shooting mainly muntjac who can come out for less than ten mins where my Z6 has given up then I switch to the .243 and drone 10.

There is no such thing as general stalking as each bit of ground holds deer who have their own time clock.

One thing I have noticed with bigger deer...Rain Stops Sun Comes Out Deer Come Out. :tiphat:

7 mm exit pupil one with quality glass and a bold reticule not a fine one . No illumination for me as it closes up the pupil . The S&B 8x56 is ideal on the face of things but its a bit high when mounted and i rate a 50 mm more . I have a few 6x42 S&Benders and for the money they fetch on the SH market they will get the job done at the lowest cost and are well suited to lighter rifles . I have a couple of 6x42 and a 50mm variable S&Bender scopes very little difference .
As we age our ability to fully use the 7mm exit pupil fades but the high glass quality scope with as close to that will always be the best .
I like S&B because they hold zero the best of any scope i have used and that's a lot of scopes in over 40 years rifle shooting. I once dropped my rifle out a high seat and the scope objective landed on a rock ! I finished for the day and returned to base for a re zero and function check , Scope held a perfect zero !

Money does not necessarily equate with best, badge engineering can be deceptive.
Schott glass, German made, lifetime warranty, try an unfashionable Minox,
or Czech made Meopta for super light gathering.
I challenge anyone to shoot a deer with the big 4, that they couldn't shoot with one of these.
Er... does that make sense??
