Best merino wool base layer?

This is very good value. I purchased one in green last year and it is super-soft and non-itchy:

I’ve got a straightforward long sleeved crewneck isobaa top from Sportspursuit and, as Klench says, it’s a quality of kit.

It’s well worth signing up to Sportspursuit if you can put up with the daily emails as they do have quite a bit relevant to the shooting world now and again...loads of merino, bestard boots, musto, chameau, fleece, goretex etc etc

Cheers

And note I didn't attempt to secure my £5 sales commission for the recommendation!

As in longjohns? 90% wool is Stanfield's of Canada that I use and wool outside but non-wool inside is Duofold. Both can be found on eBay. Both are very good products.

longjohns...?!? isn't that what old people wear... the young cool people wear base layers to help us with our thermal management while we're on our adventures :)

Plenty of choice, as usual :)

Any wearers of the Dickies bamboo one (10% for sign up).

Appreciate that Dickies may not appeal to the brand conscious or label retentive but some of their gear has been (is?) very hard-wearing.

I have some Helly Hansen Merino base layers. Not cheap, and too hot for all but the depths of a UK winter (well, down south anyway). If I could buy again I’d get a top layer with a zip at the chest to help ventilation when on the move. Normal Helly Hansen Lifa (nylon) is usually good enough for the UK. It can however stink very quickly whereas the Merino stuff doesn’t. TK Maxx are often worth a look when skiing season is on or nearing.

Go on to the sports pursuit website (you may need to sign up). There is a good selection on there at good prices. I have a bit of excema so am very prone to itching but I have had no problems in an isobaa 180 long sleeved top and a pair of boxers I bought a few months ago. Just purchased the short sleeve version this week. And they're available in green!!

The Green 180 is reduced from 75£ to 35£ at the minute.

Sometimes they have good sales on shooting gear from musto and schoffel etc. Saw a pair of Le Chameau leather lined wellies down from 210£ to 99£ this morning. That's the only thing, they do send you a lot of emails!

Another vote for Aldi’s Crane cycling Merino kit, been using it for many a year, cycling and shooting, £ for £ it’s well worth it.

I where base layer stuff all the time as work outdoors in a physical job.

I buy a lot of stuff from a big brand sports shop ( forget wot it's called) always have very good deals on karrimor stuff,.
Or from the high street outdoor chain shops.
Strictly speaking they probably aren't merino wool but do the same job and for the money u Cannae beat them.
Often 2 for 15 for t shirts and 2 for 20 for long sleeve
I'd say just as good as the old HH stuff I used to wear, which where a lot dearer

I have just recently started buying either running or cycling tops/showerproof jackets too as nice and light and bright colours not hi viz but near enough

Some really decent outdoor gear nowadays for peanuts really if u avoid fancy names and specialist activity stuff, fine for almost everything UK will throw at u

Just remembered even Screwfix do a decent wicking t shirt with collars, brilliant for work summer or winter even in the rain, and not dear

Icebreaker 100% Merino wool, tops and bottom, but, the long johns started to get a little 'thin' in places so I bought a pair of 100% Merino from Aldi last year, they are excellent although they don't have a fly!

A word of advice in relation to Merino, never let the wife wash them, fabric conditioner should be re-named fabric killer in relation to Merino wool, when you do have to wash them (rarely) wash them inside out.

Probably teaching most to suck eggs

But just mind for them to work u need ur next layers to wick as well, ( fleeces work well even the cheap 1s)
Seen me at work with a couple of base layers with a fleece jumper even a body warmer and a heavy oil skin waterproof ( completely the wrong thing to wear as nonbreathable, but waterproof all day) but atleast ur sweat/moisture is forming away from ur skin so still quite comfortable
Expensive breathable jackets and work just don't mix

I've used Halo Sports Wash for my base layers and my sons Rugby gear, great stuff.

If you sweat/overheat quickly Rab do a Merino-charcoal mix which is very thin, has a zip almost to the naval for venting and obviously stops the body stench, even when not washing it. I wear it on expeds
