Merino base layers

Hi all, I’m looking for recommendations for merino base layers. I’m preferably looking for something 100% merino or close too. Not interested in any daft branded stuff that costs hundreds of pounds. Anyone know of anywhere offering something decent for a bargain price? Cheers

All decent stuff that I have found to last years of hard use, buy once cry once.

Funnily enough I find that Aldi branded skiing base layers are good value for money. I use the long johns all though the colder months. They fit well and usually last me a year or two of four maybe five months use between two pairs.
Wash in fairy non bio and air dry.

Mountain Warehouse do a good Merino base layer.

I’ve had two sets and they’re on their 10th year now.

When I’m away on a trip I wear one set one day, other set the next.

I probably smell like a camel herders jockstrap by the end of the week !

I’d really recommend you spend the extra and get a top with a zip neck. You’ll need to vent when you’re dragging that ‘runner’ out……

Smartwool (but expensive) do some nice stuff as do so the Scandi brands.

Be careful washing them the lighter cloth versions hole easily in the machine. I put mine in a mesh bag which so far has stopped this.

Ive had merino wool baselayers from several places. Generally I find you get what you pay for. If they are cheap they wear through on the knees more quickly.
As mentioned Aldi ones I got several years ago performed well and were cheap.
I currently have tresspass, north ridge, cragghoppers. Favourite are Helly Hansen but they are £85 approx. but I would buy again. I usually can get a winter out of a pair before they are ruined. Most I buy are about £40 for long jonhs. Thats all I use

Also I would recommend washing as little as possible. If your used to merino wool you will notice it doesn't smell. Can probably get away with washing mine less than once per month

Hit your local charity shops. l have numerous items by Smartwool, Icebreaker, Finisterre etc., all bought at pence on the pound.

Merino wool is the best outdoors base- and mid layer clothing l know.
