Best merino wool base layer?

Looking for a long sleeved top as a base layer and heard merino wool is really good for wicking away sweat (I overheat very quickly when walking up any sort of incline!)
Anyone used a good one that they would recommend? Is it worth looking for leggings too?

I got an oex one (go outdoors brand), 1/4 zip, long sleeves... Was about 50 quid but we'll worth it for warmth..
I've also got a patagonia one which was about 70, less heat and definitely better for wicking and very thin

I would not be without merino wool base layers in the winter. Nearly all my work is outdoors. Entry level is Aldi or Lidl at about £30 for a long sleeved 1/4 zip top. Then at the other end is Smartwool and Icebreaker. The top of the range brands are much smoother (less itchy). Icebreaker do the in 2 different weights, 200 and 260.
One you start wearing them you’ll be hooked.

This is very good value. I purchased one in green last year and it is super-soft and non-itchy:

I find that more and more of my new clothes is icebreaker. Buy it on the end of season sales though as it’s not cheap but good quality. It is excellent. Not itchy, warm and light. Was lucky to buy a full icebreaker camo set up in the USA where they were discontinuing it so was a steal. I do have some smart wool which is also good so try some. May not need to go high end.

I use the ice breaker 260.
Not cheap but definitely worth it when you are sitting out in the cold.
Also if you do hike and sit, hike and sit scenarios like I often do after fox at night, it’s great as it wicks brilliantly so you don’t get cold when you stop.

The Lidl ones that I've seen have been merino mix and not particularly well finished.

Bought an Aldi 100% merino ski set 5 years ago, £27.98(!), and would buy again.

High end is silk not merino, used these to -26ºC day, much lower at night.

Yes, I use silk for my legs when skiing as they get too hot in merino leggings

The Helly Hansen ones with a Merino outer layer and the Lifa fibres against the skin have been non itchy and very effective....warm but never clammy...but I find the ordinary Helly Hansen Lifa stuff more than warm enough for beating for the last few mild years.

Wear them all the time, especially if sitting or standing, or lamping on a quad. Watch you don’t get too hot tho!! This is where I get mine, no issues with them. Prefer these to the harkila one I have, sweat standing still in it.
