Best Tasting Venison

Though I have taken, butchered and eaten many, many whitetail deer here at home, I would like to know what the members here consider the best tasting of deer species such as roe, fallow, sika, muntjac and red. If you have ever eaten whitetail, feel free to compare your favorite to them. I am very interested in how the members here rate these species from 1-5.

Thanks.

No.

Never tried white tail,

The CWD I have eaten- around 6 carcasses were all very palatable.

My favourite is Fallow, then Roe and then munty,

Not eaten much Red or Sika to give a good opinion.

Sika yearling or hind first.sika pricket in August or early September second
Red is very unpredictable
I don’t like roe at all, they smell funny

Fallow Pricket, though even the big boys are great if cooked correctly.

Muntjac

CWD

Roe We just don't like the taste.

Red not eaten enough to really have an opinion, however would not be my first choice.

Sika never eaten.

Rather subjective to the treatment the carcass has received from a few minutes before death, to the moment it touches your tongue. All are spoilable very quickly.

Over in the UK, I think the nicest I have tried is CWD.

Whilst I do like venison, I was very nearly put off it for life by a pal.

He cooked (no he fcuking didn't) some Roe venison.

It was so 'blue' a decent Vet could have revived it.

Damn thing almost squealed when I stuck a fork in it.

Young Fallow Doe or pricket is the best, CWD is the worst in my opinion - tastes like a cross between lamb and venison, but not as good as either.

Haha missed that one! Never eaten fallow either. 👍

Ask 10x folk you’ll get 10x answers

Taste very subjective / individual
And dependant on beast and how was handled

But all good to me be it a simple steak … to a good stew or bolognaise
Or a burger or a sausage

Love Vension and ethos of it and obtaining it yourself

Paul

Never had a chance at Whitetail :(. For me always a young animal, cooked properly, so at most medium rare. Then on my limited experience Sika followed by Fallow :). I find their both delicious.

I don't dislike any, but I’m yet to try CWD. Favourite is sika, followed by fallow and muntjac, then roe and, finally, red.
