Best waterproof jacket

Went to Scotland stalking a few years ago and the gamekeeper that took me out on the hills did not use waterproof clothing used usual vest, shirt ,jumper and standard army jacket . He covered a lot of distance and it was constant hill walking he said that the heat from his body evaporated the rain before it soaked in and kept him dry ?
I did not try it .

Interesting observation Tony. as a great many older boys still use tweed. and there reasons are the same. evaporation and keeping quiet and still blending in to surroundings.
I dont know if they still use pee in the manufacture of tweed. if so then its not the wild goats you smell on the hill or wood its a old stalker near by:D

If it rains, you have a fair chance of getting wet, either from the rain or sweat. I bought a Goretex coat when I first saw them demonstrated at the Gamefair, and it was marvelous for 2 years. I had recently torn the back out of a Barbour Solway Zipper on barbed wire, so the Gortex Codura fabric was super. A wet sweater would dry out through it if I kept moving, for example. After 2 years, every spot of rain came straight though, even the hood that had hardly ever been worn. All sorts of advice was offered.... "wash it, the pores are blocked with mud"..... "mine never leaked until I washed it", etc, etc.
Since then, I have always ignored/discounted any hype about Goretex. Even the brand new MTP army smock showed damp spots on the inside the first time it got really rained on.

Jackets - Wearite-Clothing is always worth a look, if you're not a snob.

Military surplus MTP for me. Two years ago whilst hind stalking I wore a smock over a Buffalo-type pile jacket and a merino underlayer, and whilst I got soaked through I remained warm throughout. The downside was that the cotton smock (with the full zip) is that it gets heavy when wet.
Last year I just wore the MTP goretex with pile jacket and underlayer on the top half. That was grand, and despite heavy snow and heavy, persistent rain I stayed dry and warm. I didn't find the goretex overly noisy for stalking on the open hill, but would wear the smock if I was in forestry.
On my lower half I wore an outer layer of PVC waterproof trousers from Helly Hansen, which are totally waterproof, quiet and very slippy for crawling in! The HH trousers fold up very small.
