Best way to gain C/F shooting experience before dsc 1

please dont give the police any ideas about DSC1 being mandatory or suggesting that you should not shoot deer without one.
Its bad enough as it is.

I certainly wont be putting my son through DSC1 just so he can shoot deer. I will make damn sure he can shoot, be safe, know what he is doing more than any DSC1 course can get him.

you have a responsibility as shooters to mentor newcomers to the sport WITHOUT the need for the Police enforcing that aspect.

As said previously by dave1372, get a couple of boxes of high velocity rounds for your rimfire and practise shooting from the various positions required on your DSC1,
Before I started reloading I would say I shot at least 10x.22rf rounds to every CF round on targets based on cost! also gives the CF time to cool down;)

you can not do this if you are in Lancashire as do not see DSCL1 making you a competent stalker .they say must of the training in DSCl1 is in a class room

My point precicesly is that you take a course and dont actually stalk any deer. Perhaps Lantra need to look into this and insist that if you want level 1 you must produce a stalking record card signed off by other stalkers (drop the accredited witness rubbish as its a license to charge) and you need a minimum of so many stalks and grallochs before level 1 can be taken.
That or drop the course as a requirement all together as it is already discredited as a means of judging stalking competence outside of the classroom. If it was the qualification it could be then I and others wouldnt have to mentor
level 1 holders.
When I run a woodland stalking course I make it clear its an introduction, not a replacement for level 1 and it includes 2 live stalks as well as a simulated stalk on targets after the range session. I run it on one to one and about 10 courses a year. No it doesnt make me rich but thats not the point, if I wanted to be rich I'd keep it in a classroom and push 20 people through at a time with no live stalk.
Thats why the Police recognise stalkers with a sign off from me as being as competent if not more than level 1. I always give them a stalking diary and push them to come back for more stalks to get the diary filled in.

I may be mistaken but is this not what level 2 is a stalking card signed off by experienced stalkers and level 1 is a basic understanding of deer and safe practice every one has to start off somewhere and I find without level 1 I would then need to pay £100-£300 per stalk to gain what you suggest for a stalking card. I find level 1 a great idea to educate on the basics need. You can never beat learning from an experienced stalker but it dosnt come cheap!

hooray the penny has dropped, we grant qualifications to people with no experience. 4 days doesnt qualify anyone to be called a stalker. This was the problem I foresaw when the whole lets get qualified bandwagon started. The plod insisting on level 1 and the landowners insisting on level 2. In fact none of it is necessary unless you live by payments from candidates.
We have sleepwalked into a situation where it will be mandatory because no one will fight it. You are watching the slow death of stalking as a hobby.
Soon it will be strangled by regulation and we will be in a situation similar to Canada where even the carcassehas to be available to the Ministry vet and you tag everyting.
No?
Well we are very close to that already and soon you will need to apply for tags and if you dont have the tag you cant shoot.
Its coming and it will kill the sport!
