Big gun poll

Would you get a big bore if you could?

I would like a .444 double rifle to go with my Marlin.
A Krieghoff SxS in .450/400 would be nice.

I think my .375s are adequate for anything, but a friend came back from Africa and bought a .404 to restore, and a .416 Rigby to restock in slimmer wood, after it took 4 shots of .375 to stock an angry buffalo, the last shot above the eye at 50 feet. He, his partner, and the guide ( who hit it twice in the chest with a .470 NE), could all feel the sweat dripping inside their trousers.

Wasn't there once an Association or Club where Big Bore 'African' Rifles were used, or have I been Eating too much strong Cheese before Bedtime again?

Yorkie.

Are they sure it was sweat!

I'm not that surprised it took four .375 and two .470, buffalo are vivacious animals! As the adage goes "take the biggest gun you can shoot accurately" and I would sure as hell try and get to be able to shoot a .577 Nitro accurately.

This is a fun thread, but let's not get carried away. Even their best friends wouldn't describe buffalo as vivacious.

I think this may have been posted before, but this thread I think merits this.....

Top tip: If you want to really rattle your fillings, apply a lose hold to a .577 T-rex, then squeeze the trigger......

Yes! Ha ha!
Being from the Carolinas and Georgia, they ( and I ) are all too familiar with it being so hot you have sweat running down your legs. When it is dripping off your kneecaps and splattering the dust on your boots, that is the highest stage before heat stroke.

But I have had some close calls make me bust out into a sweat like cold watermelon. My friend said they had to all three sit down on the buff to give their shaking legs a rest. His first frontal shot into the shoulder nicked the bone and just knocked out a chip the size of your front tooth. The 300-gr RN .375 bullet was dug out of muscle, bent like a stove pipe. That's hard bone.

They wouldn't have come up up with the .400 bore rifles if the survivors of angry encounters had not asked for them.

I will have a nice 375 h&h built on a left handed mauser 98 action with a good straight classic styled stock and 1.6-6 x42 scope in claw mounts. All up weight just over 10lbs. Just the job for Roe upwards.

Don't really see the application in Britain, but when I become fabulously wealthy (confidence is key) I will commission Holland & Holland to build me a fine 500NE sbs double. And then go on safari. A lot.

Slightly more realistically I really fancy a go with a big bore black powder rifle. .577/450 Martini-Henry anyone?

Maybe not in a H&H double but there is no reason you couldn't have a 500 Nitro. Get it for boar abroad and use cast bullets (wide meplat and as soft as you can get away with) since you won't have permission for expanding. When you get back you have proven your good reason, apply to have it for boar in the UK.
Thats how a lot of people get the big stuff.

I'll be scanning the classifieds for one ".577 TRex. Slightly scuffed and cracked stock with a few dings and bends in the barrel from being constantly dropped. No more than 15 careless owners. "
Its a bit like a modern " Sword in the stone" or Odysseus' bow.....do you win a Kingdom or a crown if you can shoot it and not flinch?

 Well at about 60 ft-lbs more recoil energy than a 577 nitro (in same weight rifles) it's something that even I wouldn't want to own!!

Interesting cartridge. So it's like a .366 DGW but I imagine a little shorter since it's based on 338LM rather than 416 Rigby. Either way.....it's too small ;)
