Black powder question

The presses look awesome. Good the Remington cylinder is so easy to remove. I was going to go colt single action army but Kranks advised against them due to jamming issues. Still love the look of the saa.

I've used paper cartridges for many years , I usually make up enough for a good range session the night before . It's fast and cheap ...... and doesn't require packing around a loading press . Mine aren't combustible cartridges , they're just for storing powder . To use them , tear off the end and pour the contents into the chamber , seat a ball and repeat . You can reload a cylinder very quickly with a bit of practise .

Colonel Custer! we need some of these, sir PDQ.
Custer used cartridge guns....
I have a Navy Model Remington with three fitted cylinders. I seldom preload the cylinders. I actually like the Colt replicas. My smallest is a 1849 .31 caliber with a 5" barrel. Ten grain equivalent of Pyrodex P and a .310 (buckshot) round ball and it will cut one of your one-penny pieces at 12 yards for all five shots. My favorite Colt is a 1861 Navy. Deadly accurate, points like my finger. I also have a thing for the Ruger Old Army .457"s. I have one of the first 1200 made, and a new model with fixed sights. Equally accurate to any of my 45 caliber cartridge guns. I have 11 others but these are my favorites.

Black powder revolver shooting. Good stuff. ~Muir

As much as I like my 1858 New Army , the Colts are definitely more " pointy " . I've had an 1851 Navy 36 since 1978 , it's still one of my favourite pistols . I've recently developed an unhealthy urge to own a LeMat for some reason . Ungainly looking things , but after shooting a buddies Pietta repro , it's become an itch .

It is a very nice rifle. I turned down the base plug for a Lyman 490 grain minnie so that the resulting bullet would have a thicker skirt. That is the bullet this rifle likes the best with 70 grains of powder. My Navy Arms Buffalo hunter likes it as well. I stick to standard minnies for the Enfields.....which.....I no longer have! Gave away the Parker Hale Musketoon last year. Don't know what happened to the PH three band, One day it just disappeared. I secretly suspect it was stolen by a foreign national. ~Muir

Hmm , I wonder what foreign national that might be lol . That three band is an amazing rifle , it is probably one of the more accurate ML rifles I've ever owned . You're a gentleman brother . Speaking of Parker Hales , I was going to ask you about a Parker Hale Volunteer that a young friend of mine picked up a few days ago . Would you remember what Lyman bullet was designed for these ? I wouldn't normally bother you , but since the kid got hooked on Black Powder after shooting the rifle you gave me , it's your fault lol .

Lyman made one. The #451114 Volunteer bullet. I shoot this bullet (iirc) in my Whitworth sized to .450 and loaded over a hex card wad. It actually obturates to engage the rifling. I shot 3" at 200 yard with it when my eyes were younger. It might be a bich to load in a standard grooved barrel. Can't say. That is the bullet though. ~Muir

I just took a look around the WEB. This mold is unobtainium.
More alarmingly, I went to Lyman's site and under "Black Powder Molds" it says "OUT OF STOCK". 🤔 Weird.

Might need to go with a Pedersoli version or have one made. I might have a couple of dozen cast up in my PH Whitworth box. If I can get them across the border they would get him started.

Better yet... He can just sell me the rifle and be happy. ~Muir

Yeah . I was thinking that might be the case . He knew it could be a search , but it's such a nice rifle he couldn't say no ( if he would have , I'd have taken it lol ) I'll ask him if he wants to sell it to you , but I don't think he will . When I asked him if he'd sell it to me , he told me to do things that are anatomically impossible , and to be honest , disgusting . Some would have been offended , fortunately , I'm an insensitive creature .
