Blaser K95 with moderator

You have made a great choice in stalking rifles. I would not worry about using a rimless cartridge. Extraction is fine and you'll learn to reload fast enough if you need to.

Exactly so. Mine is .25-06Rem. and I've shot many hinds and calves in Scotland requiring a fast re-load. Once you develop a technique and have it practised properly, it isn't that much slower than a bolt action. The K95 is lightweight, accurate, easy to the shoulder and when the crosshairs are on, it's certainly 'job done'. Terrific rifles & I'd never part with mine. ATB

I have exceptionally quick fingers to get those rimless cartridges out when I need to. Although I will say it certainly barks a bit with that 20" barrel.

Sorry, can't agree - it just looks 'nasty' to me. Just my opinion. You'd get the results anyway. I guess we'll all hold differing opinions. ATB

Evo,

I've found the moderator useful and what might be being overlooked is that you can shoot with or without it (subject to adjustment/check zero).
You can take it off and put on a well made screw cap which Blaser supply.
The Aimsport moderator is very light but other members may know of better/lighter ones.
I haven't noticed a great difference in weight/pointability when shooting but to be fair, all the shots I make on deer are from sticks or a rest.
There seems to be some strong opinion about what it looks like but I haven't found this having much bearing on what it shoots like.

I spoke to an Engineer at Blaser before I bought one and he recommended 6,5x55 or 7x65R.
He also recommended using 160 grain bullets to make the most of the 1:9 (1:8.7?) barrel twist but I've just used 140 grain so far

If you get down this way you're welcome to try it out.

Awmc I don,t think anyone is sayin you can,t shoot it with a can, it just looks horrible reminds me of a roofing blow torch, as to showing photos of pairs of deer, I have one of 3 fallow with a trg but would not recommend it as a stalking rifle.

Thanks for all the replies. Very much appreciated.

My only reason for considering a mod is to avoid setting off that annoying ringing in my left ear. Recoil from normal calibres would not bother me.

I do have other rifles moderated so maybe the way to go is no mod and use muffs/plugs when out with the K95.

One thing that stands out is that there are no negative comments regarding the K95 itself!

One way to avoid the temptation of a moderator.......

The only people that I know that sell their k95 are either going through a divorce or upgrading to a stutzen.

Couldn't have found a better analogy - have a like for that.

Each to their own but the whole point to having a lightweight, short, fast handling rifle to me is just that.

To the OP, the suggestion to invest in some state of the art electronic earplugs for the price of a mod is a valid one, YMMV of course, (if you don't value the intrinsic beauty of the rifle that is. :tiphat:).

I would recommend getting a gold nitride tilting block. If a spot of rust gets on the extractor it may mark the tilting block if you store the rifle with the action closed.

I have a pachmeyer trap recoil pad. It allows me to slip into shoulder without catching.

You wont regret buying a K95 and as for resale you try finding or buying a s/h one.
there's been one on this forum for sale for months

Right enough, Big White Hunter has a K95 & a very nice one too, in .243Win. Oct barrel, for sale. It's not inexpensive, but is really really nice.
I have mine & don't need another, but the market is rather 'specialised' with a single shot break action not usually foremost as a choice of stalking rifle.
However, when I first handled a K95 back in 1990 at the Kettner store in Dusseldorf, I just knew - one day I'd have enough dosh to buy one.
When in 2003 I did buy mine, it wasn't long before all rifles other than my rimmy became redundant.

Claret Dabbler... you just need to shut your eyes, think of the spec you want and get that wallet out! ATB

Yes it is. Just push the button near the trigger guard and you are right to go. I store all must stuff ready to go as I hunt on a weekly basis so I leave it in.
