This maybe a stupid question apologies in advance. I’ve got a long action blaser in 6.5x55 would a 308 barrel work on it being short action. Thanks in advance.

do you mean without switching the bolt head?

i have a 22lr a 308 and a 375 barrel and they just need the appropriate magazine insert and bolt head and they work.

There is no action length on the R8 it’s just swap barrel then if required magazine insert and bolt head.

As bri2506 says the bolt stop is part of the magazine insert. When you change the mag insert it changes the length of bolt throw so in your terms converts long action to short action. All you need to change to go from 6.5x55 to .308 is the barrel and magazine insert. The bolt face is the same for both cartridges

I have both calibers 308 and 6.5×55 and I can confirm the above. All you need to change are barrel and magazine insert. The bolt head is the same for both of the mentioned calibres. The magazine insert then determines the length of the travel of the bolt.

I can confirm same bolt's head just different inserts that are usually sold with the barrel so no addictional costs. to me (but is personal view) the difference between 308 & 6.5 swede is not worth buying two barrels. they are so similar both un hunting as in range scenario that would lead me to shell my money for different rounds.

My 6,5×55 barrel is 58 cm and 308 win 52 cm. The longer 6,5×55 is heavier up front and with a mod on it balances considerably forward. The shorter 308 is much better balanced with a mod on and also significantly lighter being both shorter and the 308 bore beeing wider than 6,5 mm standard 17 mm blaser contour, therefore also making the 308 win barrel lighter.
I also agree that there isn't much between the two and certanly not enough to justify having both barrels. If anything, I prefer 308 nowdays as it is a shorter, lighter, much better balanced rig, which punches harder and is more capable on driven hunts.

More the reason is the 6.5 is not screw cut I don’t want to remove the open sights to have it done so the 2nd barrel would have to be screw cut to take a mod doesn’t have to be a 308

I agree with Your's points that must admit I haven't ever considered cause in Italy moderator is still banned as a military weapons. Must also say that some regions asks, as minimum calibers for boars and stags, the good ole 7mm without considering the joules than other calibers like the 6 and the 6.5 can reach with appropriate loads or correct factory rounds. But as in many places of the world regulations here are often emitted by public officers who knows barely nothing on what they are administrating. This make some harms in a land that that still has his name tighted to some primary guns productions.

Here, 6,5 mm is legal for wild boar and red deer but needs to produce 2500 J at 100 m. But it is a bit on the edge energy wise for large game, at least on driven hunts. Here's how they screw cut my 308 win barrel at Blaser Germany. Mine was also with open sights and without thread and they removed the sights, retrofited the thread and then renitrated and reproofed the barrel. The cost was eyewatering though...

6.5 PRC uses a magnum bolt, all the rest are standard bolt head

Have 4 R8 blaser barrels all with open aims. Removing the front and rear aims threading the end and having a femal sleeve to fit if/when the moderator is not in use would cost 100/150 pounds here by a good gunsmith depending if the shop run the correct stops for the late or needs to make them from scratch. same job as fitting a sound breaker. Although the soon or later the restrictions on moderator will change here according with the common Eu sentiment I am all but keen on loosing the aims. Don't ask me why because I could really not explain rationally. As per energy I shot two reds on my october highlands trip one with 270 another with 257 weatherby borrowed fromy the land-keeper. energy was more than enought to me. Here the short video he had taken

Why not get another 6.5x55 barrel but a threaded one for a mod and no fixed sights, hopefully you could use the same ammo.

I would choose the 308 (or a 7x57?) if buying a new barrel. 308 works well in shorter barrels and is easier for developing subsonic loads. although I like more the swede.
