Boar Knife- Stuart Mitchell to the rescue

A friend of mine from Germany bought this knife when on a trip over to the UK last year. Many will recognise it as a last defence knife, used to finish off boar.

When I was in Germany I noticed it sat unused on a table. He said it just never really seemed to fit together and didn’t sit in the hand well. The whole thing screwed together but however much you tried to line it up, it just wouldn’t. I offered to bring it home and send it back to the maker.

The maker wondered if it had been used harshly, which it hadn’t, or dropped and this had damaged it. The more we exchanged photos the more I noticed how out of true it was. Although we were at an impasse, as the maker couldn’t physically take it back due to postal restrictions, we discussed what was wrong with it, the more I looked the more I found. The last communication we had was when I sent measurements I took using some callipers to it to check the hole through the handle. As you can see from the photo, it was way out at both ends. This explained the knife guard being over on one side under on the other and the same with the cap at the other end.

It all showed how this knife needed some work in order to become properly finished and useable.

With communications seemingly over, I turned to @Stuart Mitchell whose work I admire and I have a knife of his. It was a bold ask to ask a knife maker if he’d mind correcting the work of another's. He begrudgingly agreed, appreciating the situation we were in.

It’s now back in my hand, legally sent in the post both ways, and wow what a job. He’s reprofiled the handle on the outside so it sits better in the hand, he’s completely sorted the skewed handle caused by the inside of the handle being drilled off centre and the guard and cap on the end sit flush now. There is epoxy through to glue it all together. It really is a functional last defence knife now.

Massive shout out also to Stuart’s go to leather man Wilebore Leather. What a lovely job making a sheath for it as well as taking a commission for a cartridge belt for me. I will use him again for sure.

Thank you @Stuart Mitchell for taking this on, I think you may have an order coming in from Germany soon!

How did it come appart so easily? Surely it must have been glued/secured together, if it's a knife for dealing with a potentilay dangerious animal, I wouldent want it comming appart in my hands while in use.

It just screwed together. Could be unscrewed by hand with a little pressure.

Pretty sure that’s a Bowland, this is becoming a recurring theme!
I saw it somewhere before and as I remember 2 of those been made. Let's hope a second one is better.
Mine knives are named condoms, but here someone released some dildo

Lovely job @Stuart Mitchell!

Sometimes you have to get a true craftsmen involved to get the appropriate quality - very much why I stick with the mantra buy once, cry once!

Know exactly who I will be buying a knife from next that’s for sure!

I’m lucky enough to have 3 of Stuart’s knives.
Not only is he a world class maker but a true professional and gentleman who puts his customer service as a priority.
Buy from him with confidence.

His Portland 120 is tremendous for me from roe to red.
I seriously wouldn’t buy from anyone else now having had my fingers burnt a few times.

I bought a knife from Stuart Mitchell about 7 years ago. Bring a fussy so and so, when it arrived, I wasn’t quite happy with the handle. My friend thought it was perfect, but I spoke to Stuart. He wanted the knife back to see if he could help make it how I wanted it. As he put it - ‘you’re not quite happy, so I’m not happy’.
He couldn’t alter it without destroying it, so he made me a new perfect knife, knowing the first knife was perfect and he could sell it.
Exemplary customer service for a fussy silly customer. Subsequently I bought 2 other knives in dama steel from Stuart because his work was fantastic but moreover because he behaved like a gentleman and I knew I could trust him.
I would recommend Stuart without reservation- I suspect nobody who buys from him will be unhappy .

Would that have been a green Micarta MuntjaX by any chance @hw101 ?

Some very nice comments in here, sincerely thank you very much for them.

Yes. You looked after me very well and I’m very happy to say that in public. Making bespoke , high end items for ocd individuals (like me) is never going to be plain sailing every time. The mark of the very best manufacturers is not just their product but their ability to back their product and sort any problems that arise.
Your reputation for world class products and customer service is well recognised and very well deserved. Your customers know this and trust you. Look at your feedback on these pages - dozens of happy customers.
Other manufacturers, albeit knife, moderators, custom rifles, clothing etc would do well to follow your example - poor customer service is unacceptable and people talk!
Good luck to you Stuart. I hope to buy from you again soon.

Well done Stuart. Problem solving is always fraught with issues, you’ve done a great job.
My new knife is proving to be all I wanted it to be, another thank you from me.
