Wanted: Boar tracking for the wire

A top quality made to measure vest is a lot cheaper than a trip to the vets. I know. There are also better materials on the market now than Kevlar for making vests .

We are lucky that we have training places with fenced in boar. The best ones are where they change the boar out on a regular basis so the boar don't get too used to the dog.

The local agricultural college are talking about opening a boar training pen.

100% correct-Kevlar is not the most up to date,however,people who know nothing about protection for themselves or their dogs,know Kevlar is bulletproof-gives an indication of the protection required.
Kevlar is heavy and cumbersome.
Also Alan,100% correct with the boar getting changed around as they start to stand and look at the numerous dogs.
I too am lucky,I have been trained with boar and so has my dog,as all UKSHA members have been.......

Well its eight years since I went boar sticking it texas and six since I had half a year living in the bay of islands hunting with the guys from site most weekends so maybe kev isn't the best thing these days or even what was used at the time but it certainly was what the guys called it

Yep Kevlar is as good a way of describing the material in boar proof vest. The vest i had made for the dog is in some modern stab proof material made not far from where i live. This part of Sweden was the weaveing center of Sweden and with the dimise of normal weaveing they have gone over to making specialist stab, fireproof and many other amazing materials.

I remember training in one boar pen where the boar were so used to dogs that one boar just lay on the ground and went to sleep while the dog barked at it. Not the best place to train a dog.

Many thanks particularly to wild boar 1973 and Wolverine, just the right information I have been looking for

my initial thoughts of a track were to boar that were 100% dead and that then I could run a track on them, just to give my dog some experience of a boar! there would be no way I would place my dog in a situation with a wounded beast full stop!

i intend to progress further along the channels opened up from this thread in learning the correct way and methods, particularly as it is completely different to deer tracking, the boar are and deserve a respect like no other species due to the way they are, fierce and think differently.

my dog has been fortunate to have had a lot of tracking for deer and foxes in his time so far and he loves every minute of it when on a track, learning about Boar for both of us with the right people is something I will be looking to taking up

Phillip another good post from you, what George and Michael where edging to being a controlled situation is that tracking Boar you never know what you will get, even a perfect shot boar do not always give a good strike site so you cannot always be sure its a dead beast at the end. what can look like a good strike can be a leg shot. atb wayne.

Phil,no problem,the idea you have is very good however there is a problem in your theory.
That problem is that with boar,sometimes there is very little to zero sign at the shot site,they are hardy animals that can go a long way with a well placed shot.
Therefore how do you know the animal is dead or not?
Also wounded animals can be at the end of a track that has blood everywhere......honestly you need to learn first before attempting boar......I mean you and your dog,not just you.
Boar are not fierce when they are alive,they will shy away from people normally and people often will not know they have boar in the vicinity,until its too late,they are then established.
They definitely think differently-they are very very intelligent,when wounded they will kill......
